I plan on changing oil [synthetic]every 5000 miles in my new 5.3L engine . Based on these total miles, which syn oil should I use? I use Amsoil in my 03 vette but I read somewhere that unless you are planning extended drains[7-10 thousand miles] any good synthetic such as M1 would be a good choice for less money and there would be no difference in any good synthetic. Opinions?

I agree with Ugly3, 5,000 miles is a cake walk for any synthetic oil. You could just buy whichever name brand synthetic is cheapest that day and not worry a lick about it.
In fact, for 5,000 mile OCIs any of the top tier synthetic blends is almost surely more than enough.

modern dinos will work fine for 5000 miles. I think that if youre only keeping it for 5k, that a group III fake synthetic might be a good bet, and since mobil drive clean is such an oil, you can't beat it for $1.17 or whatever it sells for.
That said, I assume you want a real synthetic. Ive had great success with Mobil 1 10w30 in a 13k mile drain interval. However, at least the older GM truck engines didnt seem to like m1 as much, because they are a bit on the thin side. I would guess though that a Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 would be a great fit for the newer GM engines like your 5.3
I'm thinking that the german castrol 0w30 is a great bet, considering price and performance. Id also consider Mobil 1 0w-40 which is a thin 40 weight, and must have a killer additive package.

I don't drive it much and it will take 5-6 months to reach this mileage. Changing for amount of time instead of mileage.
You can achieve that with Maxlife. With Mobil 1 I would expect you could run it for a year.
That makes you a good candidate for one conventional or synthetic blend oil change in the fall and on in the spring.
No need to spend $4-$7/quart for your motor oil as there are plenty of $1-$2/quart oils which will do the job very well.
