Yesterday, I drained and refilled the ATF in my 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5. The car had Pennzoil Multi-vehicle ATF close to 100% because it was flushed. I didn't like the way it felt, shifts were harsh and long from when it was done, so it wasn't because the fluid was worn out. After draining and refilling with Amsoil ATF, which netted about 5 quarts, and it holds 9.8. So, there is 50% Amsoil ATF. The difference is night and day. Shifts are smooth and crisp. Definetely not placebo, there is a real BIG difference. I am going to do 2 more drain and refills with the Amsoil over the next couple of weeks when I have time, probably 500 miles or so. I have never used the Amsoil ATF before, but have used their oil. I am hooked on this ATF for my Nissan at least.

I don't doubt the difference because of the huge difference in those 2 ATF's. I use Pennzoil ATF in my boat because it is approved by ZF. But will probably switch to Mobil1 or Amsoil this season.

I am doing a long drain test on my Dads 91 Voyager. It has about 80k on the rebuilt trans and Amsoil fluid.

I might run it to 100k, it has a magnifine filter on it. It is kind of a battle wagon. I think I will take pics when I do it.

Nissans need the battery disconnected after ATF changes to allow the transmission to relearn.

The Pennzoil multi has always shifted smoothly in the Nissans that I've used it in. D-matic is pretty pathetic and almost any ATF is an upgrade.

BTW, in any Nissan, I find that full synthetics are always the best. It seems to make up for the shift quality issues. I would definitely expect the Amsoil to be better then a blend.

I did the Auto-Rx thing on my turbo 350 transmission, drained the fluid a bunch of times, each time I got more Amsoil ATF the transmission shifted better almost like a new transmission, hard to say whether it was the Auto-Rx treatment or the Amsoil ATF.

Good to know! I changed out the transmission fluid in my Turbo 400 ('90 Chevy G30HD 1-ton van, commercial) about 40K miles after it was rebuilt to Mobil 1 and it got a little better, but that may have been from replacing a bad mount :) I too want to go to the AMSOIL, but that's a tough pill to swallow for so many quarts when I just put M1 in it. Keep us updated, especially if you end up with a full pan of the new stuff.

Should I just disconnect the negative, or both? How long does it need to sit before reconnecting?

I have 90,000 miles on the Altima.

My Altima has a shudder at about 1500-2000 rpms. I have seen people report having this before...

Any good way to get rid of this. Does the "relearn" help with this. Or am I looking at having to get some transmission work done.

It shifts fine, but just has a shudder. Only happens when cruising, not idle or low speeds.

Disconnect either terminal. Probably only takes a couple minutes. I prefer to leave it disconnected overnight.

Along with the new fluid, the battery disconnect should help with the shudder. If it doesn't, toss in a bottle of lubegard red(which shouldn't be needed with Amsoil).

Also, don't confuse shudder with Nissans sloppy shift and TC programming. More then likely, you're just feeling it unlock or downshift. No fluid will make up for Jatco+Nissan!

Since you're approaching 100k, you should drop the pan and clean the magnets(which are loaded and doing nothing). If you don't want to, install a permacool or magenfine.

On my '03 Grand Prix GT, I'm going to drop the pan, swap out the filter and put in fresh Amsoil ATF. I'm hoping to get some smoother shifting. I think I'll get a little less than half out by dropping the pan.

Should I get slightly better mileage as well?

It is a continual shudder/vibration at 1500-2000 rpm range. It only happens when in gear. Would this be TC unlocking or downshifting? I am not sure. Thanks.
