I drained and refilled my ATF today with 3 quarts of Amsoil synthetic ATF and the Integra shifts like new again, I've never felt an Integra shift so smoothly before. It used to have the traditional jerkiness of an older Honda ATF, and now I can barely even feel it shift. Great stuff

Makes me so tempted to put it in my Corolla auto transmission needing T-IV to see if it cleans up the low speed shifting .....

Great to hear a success story

Also, what year was your Honda, what ATF is recommended by Honda for the transmission and what were the symptoms that prompted the change to AMSOIL ?

I thought the older Honda ATs were designed to shift at full pressure, for a short+firm shift. They generally held up quite well, at least compared to their later smooth models.

While they weren't the most comfortable, one nice quality of those old Honda ATs was that even with the throttle wide open the shift was still quick. Most other regular ATs (in my experience, at least when they have covered some miles) get sloppy (slow) in high power shifts.

Could a 'smooth' engagement on a design intended for quick firm shifts lead to premature clutch wear? I am not suggesting it will, merely asking because I don't know.

I think you're confusing quality shift with a poor shift. Too many times a firm, rough, or quick shift is happening because the ATF is used beyond its life.
Smooth shift occurs anytime a spent fluid is replaced with a new fluid. Even if you flush with OEM ATF, you'll usually instantly feel the difference in shift quality. Shift quality usually means smoother or seamless. Thats what the market wants. You can still have a smooth and quick shift.

Clutch wear occurs if shift is incorrect, or if programming can't accept a fluid outside the 'HFM' level. For example, flush a new electronically controlled transmission with Type-F, and it won't last too long. Another example is good ol' Dexron being used in certain Chrysler transmissions which get confused quickly and too easily. Yep, OEM engineers are too lazy or stoopid and can't program a fail-safe shift if an incorrect fluid was accidently used.

Don't you know it's not possible to make a multi-vehicle ATF, according to our resident "experts"?

You know what they say about experts?

Everyday they learn more and more about less and less till they know everything about nothing.

My car's a '95 and it's by nature a rough shifting automatic (it's basically a manual, only computer controlled shifting, in laymen's terms) It's supposed to use Honda Z-1, but the Amsoil ATF meets/exceeds that spec. No symptoms, just hadn't been done in a while, and I like to keep my car well maintained

may i ask where you purchased it as i changed my transmission fluid @ 30k with the toyota type T-IV. I'm really considering putting in amsoil

I did my Neon recently and put in the 90 ounces and I have the same report. Awesome. Even got to have one really cold day in single digits and it was still shifted as if it were 70. Great stuff. Mine replaced ATF+4.

Blokey How long have you been using Amsoil ATF I also have a 3.2 CL in the S flavour mine has 120,00km or 75,000mi I am bit worried about transmission and change fluid often. Having heard that multi-vehicle fluids are a compromise and ATF Z-1 is the only good fluid I am a bit hessitant to use Amsoil so any info about use of an ATF other than the one and only Z-1 in a Honda/Acura transmission is greatly appreciated.
BTW Buddy here at work has a '93 Acura Legend 375,000km (235,000 miles) and the transmission shifts almost seamlessly changed fluid in it 3 or 4 times (as far as he rememmbers)

Dominik, just saw your post. I dunno, I think I started the switch to Amsoil about a year ago. I did a d&f every month a bunch of times so I'm now over 95% Amsoil. I noticed no degradation in shift quality or anything, just less debris on the magnetic drain plug.

By my experience, it has only been an improvement over the stock Z1. I tried Amsoil after reading the posts on this website, I just wish I hadn't hesitated and switched over sooner.

Disclaimer: YMMV

Amsoil's ATF is perfect for a Z1 replacement. I've used it for nearly 80K with no difference in shift quality from the day I bought it. It hopefully will make my Civic's transmission last as long as I need it to (more than 200k).
