Chevy LS engine in 2008 Burb. 2nd last sparkplug to the firewall in passenger side. Was pulling the socket off the plug ( with the spark pug still part way in. Clink, clink, clink. Socket is gone. Didn’t hit the floor AFAIK. Somewhere down there but dang, this isn’t a measly 1/4 inch drive socket. Looked from the top and bottom. Can’t see it. Ran a scope between the exhaust manifold and metal manifold cover. Can’t see it. Does anyone know where the secret hiding place is?

It's an added bonus when you buy an old car to restore and you find a socket that was lost years ago. In the future maybe sockets will have some kind of built in tracker.

It's resting against that hidden sensor waiting for enough heat and vibration to do just enough damage to throw intermittent codes and trip the check wallet light.

Murphys law, A lost socket that has disapeared into the engine bay abyss, will always come to rest where it can cause the most damage.

Floor is still a possibility !
I have done the same ! but mine did turn up on the floor and I was 1000% positive it was under the hood somewhere .
It did turn up under a work bench about 15 ft away mind you this was a 15mm 3/8 socket so not so easy to spot as a spark plug socket .

Found it. It was lying on the crossmember that runs under the oil pan. I had done a swipe with my hand earlier but missed it.

Almost as fun as when I dropped an air filter housing retaining clip into the engine bay on my BMW 535d. Not being very familiar with the engine and not wanting that metal clip to end up somewhere it didn't belong, I spent a solid 2 hours of a Saturday morning looking for and finally fishing that thing out. Not fun.

Now you are ready for the real fun going after that #8 plug pointed at the firewall. On my Yukon the only combination of tools I could come up with that would fit in that space and also reach the plug was a 3/8 handle and a spark plug socket with built in universal joint that I had bought at a yard sale. The only time I have ever used it.

The only thing as annoying as this is finding a random nut or bolt in your garage or driveway and having no idea where it came from or what is going to fall off. Reminds me of the scene in Ford vs Ferrari.

Haha.I have a separate thread on that. Just finished. 🤪

4 things-
1) swap to the magnetic ones
2) get even the cheap HF locking extensions
3) use one of the locking/push button ratchets
4) call me next time. I'll drive behind you and guaranteed it will fall out, bounce up and hit my windshield or some other easily damaged part at front of my car.
