4Runner V8 - suggestions please?

btw, if i had to put anything thats the "best" in my truck it would be more focused on the tranny not the motor. your tranyy takes more abuse than your motor and most times will go out before your motor unless you overheat the motor (tip, if you overheat your yota motor go have it compression tested bc yota motors are fantastic until they overheat, their head gaskets cant take it)

There are a number of UOA's on the board for the Toyota V8 engines. Lots of different oils used, read through them and see what you think. Ignore all of the "it's noisy", "my engine doesn't like it" and other similar silly subjective comments. Just look at the numbers and make up your mind.

The nice thing about the Toyota V8's is that it's almost impossible to pick an oil that shows high wear in one provided you stick with reasonable weights...

The 5-speed in the 4Runner is a bullet proof tranny. We use a V8 with the tranny driving a ball-mill in a mine and it gets beat like no road vehicle ever does. We drain and fill the tranny and do the oil changes based on fuel burned. The tranny takes really heavy shock loads and never falters. This engine is setup to work at full load, throttle wide open all the time it's running. One thing I would do with your 4Runner as I'm doing with mine is to drain out the tranny fluid every 30k miles and refill with Red Line D4. Do the same with your dif but use Red Line 75w-90. For my next round I'm going to look into switching to RLI for the tranny and diff. I plan to drive this 4Runner to my grave, along with my 84 Civic and my wife's 96 Volvo 850 wagon. Paying a little more for fluids is ok with me and being agressive with maintenance is my plan.

If you want piece of mind, I totally understand sythetic. Do not let anyone talk you out of it if that is whay you want. I run sythetic in everything I own that has an engine. Overkill? Yes. But it makes me happy. Nuff said.

That 4-Runner will run happily on a good dino oil for years and years with no issues. The drivetrains in 4-Runners are extremely good and very tough. Besides the headgasket issues with the early 3.0 V6 engines and the early 3.4 V6 engines (that Toyota paid for thank you very much) I know of no drivetrain problems with any year 4-Runner. Just a great vehicle.

Still searching. I used M1 5W30 last OC because I had some kicking around. Now I need to buy fresh oil.

Is Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 still highly rated? I like Redline oils but perhaps they are more 'race' oriented (less detergents?) that the 4Runner wants?

If it were mine, I'd use PZ Plat. After this OC of PZ yellow, My Tacoma and Highlander will use PZ Plat during the winter months, and possibly PZ Yellow during the summer months. This along with a Napa Gold or similar constucted oil filter. (Bosch, M1, etc)

I have a Tundra with a very similar if not identical engine and have been using the much maligned M1 5w-30 with no noise issues, consumption, or any other problems at all. On my last OC about 200 miles ago I went with Synpower and it runs just as well and seems just as happy. It now has 174k and runs like new. I thought about going with a High Mileage oil for a bit, but there is nothing the way this engine performs, looks, or anything else that allows me to really feel like it is a high mileage engine. Just getting broken in as far as I'm concerened.

All of this M1 bashing is getting out of hand. I have a 1997 4Runner V6. It had regular oil changes of the 3k mile variety on a steady diet of Valvoline 5w-30 upto 150k. Never burned a single drop. These are amazing motors. I switched to M1 5w-30 at 150K just to see if there was any truth to the "don't switch to a synthetic after high miles on Dino...) I now have 170k miles...and guess what.it still doesn't burn a drop...and no leaks. Everything is great! M1 5w-30 works fine. Dino oils work fine in these motors though, so really just pick something that makes sense to you. Don't over think it. I like the synthetics for the higher mile OCI's and I'm going to change to GC just for fun!

Sorry but what is "PP"? I trust that this engine will last on dino oil but synthetic makes me feel better

I hadn't realized that M1 5W30 had such a bad rep

Maybe I should stick with the Redline.

Redline oil is expensive, but you aren't going to beat it.

If you're willing to spend that kind of money, I don't know why PP keeps getting mentioned. PP is a very good oil, but it is no Redline.

Amsoil ASL 5W-30 is what I would use. Nobody can say there's a better oil out there for your application, because there isn't. If you want a top of the line group IV oil, there you go. This stuff makes my 06 Toyota engine run like buttah :)

If you go with Amsoil, buy it directly from Amsoil rather than from a local jobber or auto parts store that carries it. The reason I say that is because this oil doesn't "turn over" very fast at these stores that stock it, and there's a real chance that you wouldn't be getting the latest fresh oil from them. But that's not a problem when the company ships to you :)

Maybe he prefers a top-of-the-line group V oil, like Redline?

Redline also sells their products directly off of their website.

As suggested here your Lexus born V8 engine is bullet proof and would run fine on any lubricant. It's how much you want to spend I guess. I've used Motul Eco-nergy and Elf Evolution SXR 5/30 in my 06 Sport V8 but after a few price increases on both I couldn't justify continued use.

Have switched to PP 5/30 now because as mentioned it is a qualtiy performer and it's hard to beat the price. As far as your transmission goes I stick with the OE Toyota "WS" product as there isn't really anything listed as a direct replacement, only as suitable.

Good point, he might want to use a group V oil.

But why would he? When I looked at which oil to run in my Toyota a few months ago, I could see no real advantage of a group V over a true group IV oil.

It costs more money ( quite a bit more ).

I couldn't see where it lasted any longer.

I couldn't see where it offered better protection.

In fact, I was told that unless I had a turbo or was racing my rig, there was no need for group V oil.

That's why I said that for his application, there really isn't a better oil than the ASL.

But you're right, Redline is good oil, for sure.

Ok just curious! I just bought A Lexus GX470 with the same V-8 and I was wondering what to use for the oil change. I had a 99 4Runner V-6 and all it got was 0W-30 Series 3000 amsoil, so Ill guess I will stay with that or the PP. I like my Yearly oil changes though
