4runner & Tacoma mpg

I was looking at the 4runner's and Tacoma's mpg. Both of these vehicles are available with either the 2.7 I4 or 4.0 V6.

Now look at these HIGHWAY mpg figures, from Toyota's website.

Tacoma Prerunner 2wd 2.7 manual - 26 mpg
Tacoma Prerunner 2wd 4.0 manual - 18 mpg

4runner SR5 2wd 2.7 auto - 23 mpg
4runner SR5 2wd 4.0 auto - 23 mpg

Now, I am NOT comparing the Tacoma to the 4runner. I'm comparing the mpg between the 2 engines in each vehicle. Why the huge difference in the Tacoma and not the 4runner?

The Toyota 2.7 gets better MPG because you can't brake properly, and the throttle sticks in one position!



I amuse myself.
But that disparity certainly does seem way out of line. Are the final drives the same?

You might want to look at "fuelly.com" for an additional resource. You can get a more real-world point of view on what people are getting for mileage...

Of course, a lot of people could be fudging numbers there. But it's another site to compare vehicle mileage.

How come the 4.0 loses so much MPG on the Taco but not the 4runner?

My guess would be that the 4runner completed design when gas was much more than the Tacoma's mid cycle refresh, and is geared more heavily on the V6 than the V6 is on the Taco.

I seriously doubt that the Taco PreRunner could achieve that sort of mileage unless it has significantly smaller tires than my 2000 Tacoma 4x4.

I would suggest fuelly.com also. It's pretty easy to spot the "good" reports and those who are fudging it. Simply look for those with 30+ fill-ups and you should be nearing a good average for that vehicle and the driver. BTW, my truck is averaging 22.5 mpg with lots of highway miles.

The 2010 4 runner v6 is differnt than the Tacoma v6. They are both 1grfe however te 4 runner has Dual VVT-I whilst the Tacoma only has a single(intake) VVT-I

We drove my FIL's now crushed due to frame recall Tacoma 4x4 base model down to VA to pick up something I won on E-bay.

Base includes 4x4 with manual hubs, 2.7l/5M, and A/C.

The entire trip we averaged 22-24 MPG all highway with me driving whatever speed traffic was flowing at. Which at I95 was above 75MPH at some points. We also burned a lot of fuel idling along at a huge backup. I was impressed, it got exactly what the window sticker said, maybe better if I slowed down.

I'd imagine 25+ is easily attainable with 2wd. Real shame it had to be crushed.
