460 truck 1000 mis/year. How often to change

The 7.5L / 460 truck gets driven 1000 mis/year. How often to change the oil?

I cannot even remember the last time I changed oil in it. I think it was last summer, nor can I remember what I put in it.I think it was chevron delo 15w-50.

Looking at the oil, it doesn't look black yet.

Should I replace the oil? What's the schedule for rarely driven vehicles?

Is this truck fuel-injected or carburetor?...Even with carb one could get by with yearly oci's...

Once a year with Delo 15w40 will be fine and definately keep the truck; you never know when you might need one.

EFI it is.

When you need something big from Home Depot, or firewood - it's nice. Definitely cheaper than rental, plus I can abuse it.

The engine has 60K miles on it and was replaced. Runs very nicely.

'm with the herd on this one 12 months. That's also th amax time that some new car manufatures recommend for oil changes, and these are companies that allow up to 12,000 miles if that's what the OCI readout says.

Why was the orginal engine replaced?

What type of trips. How long each time?

With that info, we could make better suggestions.

My uncle has a retired 1978 F250 4x4 351 V8 truck. Its got close to 200k and he has decided that for a work truck its worth keeping around.

The average trip is less than 5 miles. Then a trip to haul 4 wheelers once or twice a month for 50-100 miles one way.

That means in a 6 month period it may get up to 2k. Prob closer to 1700. Carb powered and runs perfect. We change the oil and filter every 4-6 months with whatever is on sale.

We want to get the water and fuel out of there. Even with the trips of 50-100 miles, there was water/fuel in the UOA I had run a couple of years ago. (and then it was seeing 4k OCI every 4-6 months)

PS: Don't go by color of oil. We have seen alot of "ugly" oil show up decent used oil analysis and even more, go the distance!

I'd change it once a year with a good 10w30. What's with using 10w50??? Way too heavy, IMO.

I'm with Bill on this one, and am too curious as to why you needed the engine replaced so soon. 60K miles is nothing for a good truck engine...

The PO replaced the engine some years ago, factory warranty, because the original 7.5L burned a lot of oil. I think most 7.5L (460) burn a lot of oil, but this one must have been exceptionally bad.

Anyway, the vehicle has 100K miles and does show that it's nearly 20 years old. But the engine seems to be running like new. Burns a bit of oil.

The vehicle is used as my backup vehicle, when the primary fails.

Trips are city driving with some highway. Probably 1.5 miles per year.

It doesn't have any resale value, which is why I am keeping it.

I'd change it every 6 months with whatever you can get on sale. 10w30 for summer and 5w30 for winter. Do change the filter each time IMO.

I'm concerned with water/fuel in the oil from mostly city driving.

Yes, thats only 500-750 miles on the oil but those big V8s do make alot of water.

How is the truck stored when not in use and how long is it driven when it does get used? If stored outside and/or only used for very short trips I would change it every 6 months. Moisture will accumulate even if you don't drive it at all, especially if exposed to outside dew cycles daily.

If stored inside and if it gets at least one 1/2 hour or longer run per month then I would go to once per year.

As you can see, the oil held up perfectly, even with water contamination...any modern 5W/10W-30 that you can get on sale will be the cheap and easy solution to your oil needs!

I would not run anything thicker then 10W30 in it and maybe a 5W30 would be ideal. The new 5W30's are really good and it will improve flow. In a vechile tht sit's as much as this one does cold flow and cranking are important since most of the oil will have drained off thepart's by the time you need to use it again. Itis not like you are driveing htis thing weekly. If ever you need to start tis thing in a MD winter after sitting for month's 15W50 oe 15W40 isnot going to get it done!!! So for go any oil burning issue's or wear that heavy towing might cuase and pick a much thinner oil for this application. I would not change anymore often then every 6 months but wouldnot worry about an anaul change either!!!

Would every 6 months be marginally better over the next 50,000 miles? Maybe, but 50 years from now I guarantee you that truck engine won't be your worry.
