40K miles on a Magnefine - picture

OK, the vehicle is a 2001 Jeep GC 4.0 engine with SelecTrac.
The Magnefine was run about 40K miles from 60K to 100K. The ATF is mostly Amsoil ATF. The pan was dropped twice due to a pressure governor failure and each time 7 to 9 QTs of Amsoil ATF was pushed in.

The magnet feels like its covered with a grey-black grease, almost like Neverseeze. Cannot feel any metal particles on magnet. Hard to wipe off from fingers like Neverseeze also. The filter media has a few (less than 5) particles in it that can be seen. I think the Magnefine could have easily gone to 50K or more.

I have the same vehicle.....where did you mount the filter?

I've been wondering how long to keep my Magnefine on there. They say 10K (gee, I wonder why?), but that always sounded ridiculous to me.

Its mounted maybe 2"-3" from the cooler on the return line. No wire wraps, the hose seems to hold it just fine.

Magnefine may say 12K, I think that is printed on some labels of the filters. Our sponsor may say more like 30K.

Ok, I can believe that. I also think there is more than one label. The one I got at NAPA a few years ago was a Raypestos branded Magnefine. There could be other labels also. Not a big deal 10K or 12K. Maybe someone who installs a Magnefine at 100K miles without an ATF change ever should change the Magnefine at 10K. But that person of course would not subscribe to BITOG.

Mine is a Raybestos. 10K or 12K, it's probably overkill. I was going to change at 20K. Still overkill?

Maybe it should be based upon what kind of BITOG guy you are. So four times your normal OCI (oil for engine)?

I do about 7500 to 8000 OCI. So 30K is when I should have done it. It actually was on the list for 30K. But an engine replacement messed up the list.

Ok, I used a knife to pull some of the pieces from the media section of the filter. They are in the picture. They do not feel very hard or sharp, not metal.

Take some of this "grease" off and put it on a paper towel or whatever. Then put a magnet on it. Every time I change my Honda Accord transmission fluid the drain plug magnet has some of this stuff on it. It's metal paste. Your magnet filter is doing what it is supposed to be doing IMO.
