4016 Ingersoll Hydraulic Fluid

I need to fill my hydraulic system and in the manual it recommends 20W40 motor oil. Does anyone know if I can use AW46 hydraulic fluid, (which I have on hand), or do I have to stick with the motor oil. There is dissension out there as to whether it would be safe to use in this application.

I would go with the OEM requirements. The seals in the system are what I would be worried about if you use an out of spec fluid.

Use 15w40 motor oil, its what i use in my ingersoll and case lawn mower hydraulic systems.

Hydraulic fluid would most likely be just fine, but I would go a grade or two thicker than 46 in this application.

SAE 40 engine oil is equivalent to an ISO 150
with a 40C viscosity between 135 and 150.
15w40 instead of a mono grade 40 seems like a reasonable suggestion.

I have a 4016 and a 4020ps, both are 1997 year models. All I have ever used is 15W-40 motor oil, never had a problem with the hydraulic system using it.
