Just got a 4 stroke weed whacker. MTD Pro, 29cc 4 stroke Briggs (iirc)

Came with a 90ml bottle of hd30 oil which I used.

How long should I run that oil for break in?

By break in procedure was pretty elaborate. Add oil, add gas, use until pooped.

I've got a ton of rotella T5 10w30 can use for it, but would buy whatever is needed. The paperwork actually recommends synthetic. I've got some 5w30 Mobil 1 HM, and 5w30 Castrol edge EP I could use as well.

Thoughts?

I'd run it a couple hours and change it and call it good. It's going to take you a while to get a couple hours on it just using it for your own home.

There's a million posts about this but generally they all boil down to:
1: Run it for like 5 hours on that supplied oil or any oil in the viscosity range, to set the engine and flush out some metal grit that is common in those engines. ( The glitter in the first oil change)
2: Change oil when hot and stirred, and run it again for maybe 10 hrs
3: Done. Start changing at the maker's OCI, could be 25 hrs on a non filter engine.

Comments:
- It is not important to use dino for break in, just old tale. It could be 15 cents cheaper, but that's it.
- Many prefer HDEO to auto oil when running multi grade. Probalbly not important if you actually change oil at 25 hrs. But your Rotella will make you a caring owner.
- Don't idle it for break in, use it normally.
- Check air filter once in a while too.
- Get a high quality funnel with a fine mesh, will reduce dirt in your tank and also reduce your "problems with ethanol" gritting up your carb.

Fuel doesnt matter...since 4stroke OPE engines are all with low compression ratios....

Fill it, run the snot out of it a couple time, change the oil and repeat. For these small engines I like to change the oil after a couple hours, there's going to be plenty of shiny stuff in the oil. Do a second or third oil change on the same shorter interval till the shiny metal goes away then change it every season after that unless you run it alot, then change it every 40-50hrs unless the manual tells you different.

Fuel related problems are way more of a concern
Or that you will probably have a problem with.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies!

I think I'm going to do exactly like ironman says below.

though thinking about it some more, for the 90mL of oil it takes, I could easily just change it every single time I use it.... that much oil is next to nothing!

I just put the steel brush cutting blade on last night. hoping tonight or this weekend I can go out and cut down some thistle trees and give 'er another good run in. then i'll probably change it and use the T5. I've got some Edge Gold 5w30 I need to use up too, but i'll probably stick with the HDEO.
