It was a dipstick that he was whacking people with. He'd whack them usually in the back of the legs as he yelled
"Think with your dipstick, Jimmy!".

This was circa 2009, I believe. It was a low point in motor oil marketing if there ever was one.

In thinking about it further, this could be genius marketing. In one of two ways..


The first is, to get the brand stuck in your head so you think about it. And we are still talking about, Castrol. So in that sense, the ad was a success. The best ads do this, they get you to remember the thing they are selling and hopefully steer you to that specific one.

The second is, what are you going to do, not buy motor oil? Hey, maybe I'll go buy the one with the guy whacking people with a dipstick.

So while I agree, I may see why they would ever do that.

This was my all time favorite oil commercial. It definitely worked on meths commercial was what introduced me to Syntec (which I used for years) and synthetic oil.

Well, they might. The whole battle might just be shelf space at Walmart and auto stores more than targeting specific customers. I'd bet it is a far more complicated equation than we know. Of course, none of them saw Covid coming, but rather were banking on the strong economy continuing, which it would likely have done.

Then again, history is littered with motor oil marketing misfires.

I own both a hybrid and stop/start vehicle … and would argue if there was actually a concern … Pennzoil Gold would offer enough protection and polarity … plus both engines are easy on oil …

Been using Chevron Supreme as top-off oil in my commuter GDI. Seems to work just fine and its cheap.

I agree. I’ve always had a spare quart in my vehicles just out of habit.

Perhaps this TopOff oil is being marketed to the same people that need to be reminded by the instructions on a frozen pizza to remove the pizza from the box and wrapper before placing in the oven?

There has only been one niche oil made in the last few years that has been intriguing to me, or at least, is a nice idea - Modern Engine for GDI and Driven GDI oil.

It's only used for topping off, for those who allow the oil level to go real low, then just top off. No different than filling gas tank, it gets a bit low, then top off with 87 when the tank has 91 in it. Is "top off" oil service rated?

The fact is, Shell already makes a top off oil. It’s called Pennzoil, Quaker State, Shell.

Maybe someone should remind the marketing staff about that?

An outline of technical aspects of a top up oil could be interesting actually. Most talk about Truck / SUV / Pickup oils etc. never tried to really deal with eventual distinction, as nuanced as it might be. Now there's this first announcement beyond the german phenomenon or whatever (OMV and Liqui Moly at least have universal top up oils too) and we could do better this time, but all we can ask Pennzoil for is to leave us alone? Quite the german disease...
Yes, it's BITOG here and hardly anybody would ever buy top up oil bottles at gas stations. Still, with product data sheets expected to become shorter and shorter we could at least tend to beg for extended explanatory poetry. Redundant threads can be just what we make from not the silliest of questions.
