The sump in my Mum's 97 1.8L Nissan is only 3L. This is a Japanese import with no manual but if I can decipher the sticker under the bonnet they say it can go 15,000km on their oil, which I guess is their 7.5w30.

I want a 1.5-2 year long OCI if possible out of this thing because I don't get the chance to do it often. She wont exceed 15,000km in 2 years.

It also needs to be cost effective. M1 etc is way too expensive here. Options are most likely 10w30 or 15w40. Would Penrite/Repco 10w30 do the job? Or would I be better off with their 15w40 diesel/HDEO which I have read is pretty good. The engine is in good shape done 190,000km.

I use Repco 10w30 in my 2L Nissan SR20 with 3.5L sump. It does 12-13000km over 1-1.5 years without a problem. No UOA done but it's keeping it nice and clean at least.

I would just share my concern and ask if the car sees any oil level checking or anything during that time. I know you don't service it in that time but does someone at least check the oil?

As long as the level is kept up and a decent syn is used, I would thin your regimen is fine (1.5-2yr). I myself wouldn't push it any farther though. I don't think I'd bother with the HDEO if it were me.

I think a nice HDEO 15w40 should work great that app. 15w40 HDEOs should have solid a TBN buffer and shear stability for Ozzie conditions.

3L is a small sump, though. Is there an oversized 3/4 oil filter you could use to increase that?

Good idea on a larger filter, the recommended filter is tiny. It actually takes 3L including the oil filter!

I think you need to go to the upper end of synthetics to get 10K miles (15K km) from the oil over 18 - 24 months.

The sump is 3 l or 2.6 QT. Thats a huge concern. Lawn mowers have bigger sumps.

I think you are asking for trouble trying to go that long in distance with a tiny sump and no UOA.

I would plan on yearly oil change at 6K km.

My Jeep is 6 QT and my Cummins is 12 QT. I prefer the larger sumps, but people do not decide which car to buy based on oil sump size. But maybe they should.

3 litres is 3.17 Quarts. Still a worry I know. Long term I probably need to find a local mechanic to service the car. Current OCI is now at 18 months on 15w40 pcmo.
