if a piston got to more than 500 degrees then every car would be "severe service" and we'd probably know about it by now.
Turbos get alot hotter than 500F. Im going to have to investigate this more.
 
The flame front is very hot but it is only temporary (kind of like quickly running a torch across it) and I think there is a vapor barrier between the aluminum piston and the flame front. If the combustion loses control and detonates, you get a high pressure spike and the thin barrier breaks down and the flame can burn through the piston.

i said turbo bearings, not turbos themselves. those things can glow.
