Standard Blackstone report. Values not listed were zero.

This was run Jan-March 04. 2000 Buick Regal. Obviously another M1 report is not needed here at Bitog, but I wanted to check the condition of my engine and be assured I can work up to 8K if req.

This was the ist uoa for me on M1 and first fill. Previous oil was Castrol Syntec 10W-30.

Got Terry's analysis on it.

Looks good. Those 3.8l engines are worth their weight in gold. IMO, looking at the numbers, I'd say 8K is definently doable with this oil. Still a solid 30 weight.

Yeah, the day I get this report back, is the same day my Autozone loads up on GC. Now I don't know what to do.

I thought a bit more Visc. might be better, so I was thinking about M1 0W-40 and now GC 0W-30. Now I'm not so sure.

You know, I don't think you could improve much on these numbers. If it ain't broke, don't fix it applies here.

I guess maybe you're right. I became convinced that a more viscous oil might be better, but unless I have consumption issues, I may stay where I'm at.

I sdded 1/2 qt. because I filled a bit low for winter and added a bit much at 3k, so really no consumption.

we need more reports from that engine though.

For the summer I'm switching over to Delvac 15w-40 in that engine. Still not sure what I'm going to run in the winter.

Let us know your results if you do a uoa. I like something I can run year 'round.

Look how low the iron is....??? Usually much higher with M1.

I'd increase the drain interval by 50%, based on this data. With warmer weather arriving your oil contamination will decrease the TBn retention should be even better.

This 3.8L GM, V-6 is the engine used in the API, Sequence IIIF, high temp/high load test. Unlike the Vortec V-8's, this engine is very easy on oil. I suspect that is the reason why the API and domestic auto makers chose it. Try to run 80 hours @ 3600 rpms;oil temp stabilized @ 155C/311F; 100 Hp rated load with the 3.0L, Toyota V-6. I don't believe you could get ANY petroleum oil to pass the spec with that engine.

Editorial Comment:

The API,SAE and ASTM really, really need to consider using a DOHC, high output V-6 as one of their standard test engines. As it is, API testing has almost NO relevance for current Japanese and European engines. I'd look for ACEA "A3/B3/B4" or "A5/B5" ratings for any high performance, OHC or DOHC motor ....

TooSlick, I could not agree more. Using this engine for any relevant standard testing is a waste of time.

The North American consumer loses again, when API standards have no relevance.

Yup, where did my iron go??

Blackstone shows 18 for Iron and 8 for lead on their universal averages. Copper is about the average.

This was my very 1st M1 run after changing from Castrol Syntec for 50K with short oci's.

We'll see what the next run on M1 looks like with warmer temps.

I'd love to get those numbers from my 3.8L. I guess I shouldn't beat on it so much and move out of the freezing cold north.

Nah, I've got no mods on the Regal. The only thing I really want to do to it is get rid of the &*^*&^* speed limiter.

I wouldn't mind getting my bike out on the track someday tho.
