higher octane ratings imply that it is less resistant to uncontrolled and unwanted combustion, nothing about burn rate.

He is pointing out the fact if your car was not designed to take advantage of a higher octane rating your potential fuel savings that could be had you would be canceled out due to the higher octane rating.

Well, it depends upon how old hemitom is. My dad disliked U.S. gallons as much as he disliked litres. A lot of older Canadians still remember the Imperial gallons. The younger Canadians have no exposure to gallons outside U.S. gallons.

Imperial Valley has some of the worst air quality in the USA at least that is what I have been told by the local Navy base.

There are so many issues, including individual engine ECM calibrations to state categorically that one fuel will have xx% less fuel mileage than another. The newer flex fuel type of engines have some pretty sophisticated timing parameters and such, that BTU content of a fuel does not explain away things quite like in the past. Many of the testing on vehicles using, say E10 and regular, is not showing the great mpg disparity of the past. But then this is primarily on the flex fuel engines that were designed out of the gate to get better results from ethanol from E10 to E85. For traditional vehicles, those disparities may still be as they were in the past.

Other than that, I can only see any real cost benefit to using premium, if one installs a specialty tune to the ECM that can modify the timing and such to truly take advantage of the higher octane fuel. Then it might truly be worth doing. I have seen several examples of folks that went to premium, combined with a custom ECM tune, and picked up some respectable mpg gains.

In forced induction though higher octane usually nets more power. In a N/A motor may be a slight increase due to timing advance.

So yeah higher octane may create a smoother engine due to the timing advance. The hp increase in a n/a motor would not be felt.

In forced induction though hp increase may be felt.

We are only talking 2 points different 91 vs 93.

When I drove my Evo 9 the difference between 91 and 100 race gas was VERY noticeable.

All depends on the car and it's tuning.

Very true.

I had a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2, I made 105HP on a dyno, with a Ford Racing ECU (91+ recommended) I made 115hp, with a proper custom dyno tune for 93oct I made 126WHP.

Thats 21WHP gain, or change of 124(130 rated) to 148 crank with JUST taking advantage of fuel properly. I also saw my MPG, rated 33HW, which I did a lot of at the time, go from 33-35, to over 40MPG. In a car as light as the escort you could feel the nearly 20% power gain.

I really don't get why more companies don't just tune their cars properly from the factory to take full advantage of 91oct. They will make more power, and get better economy. There must be some reason why, but I haven't found it yet. I know that all cars/regions have different variables, but it seems manufactures are overly conservative.

I later did a dyno test on Fords "emissions update" they gave to the ZX2 and it literally took the car to 100whp. vs that same day a ECU with out the update made 107whp. while thats not a big deal , just 7whp, it also killed the MPG of the car, noticeably.

The average 5spd manual is 15% drivetrain lose. So a 130HP car should make about 110 at the wheels. 107 is close, with in 3-4 of the rating, but 100whp means that your car that was rated, 130, making 127, is now only 118, thats 12 less than you paid for. On top of that your MPG is going to go down. I average about 28MPG HW on it. It was a night and day difference between the "Emissions updated" and the proper tune, that was just on a completely stock Escort coupe. After I did all the tuning/testing on that car I refuse to drive a car with out a proper ECU tune done on it.

Even if a tune/software costs me $500. i worked out that if I get 3MPG better, that will be paid off in under 3 years, after 7 years I will have not only paid off the tuning, but also have another $800-900 saved in fuel. To some $800 over 7yrs isn't a big deal. I see it as Invest $500, get that $500 back, and get 2 free car payments and a more responsive/fun car. $800 will pay for a lot of oil changes.

That would be one, but the OEM's have to cater to the lowest common denominator among their buyers. Except for the sports car crowd, a lot of folks will just look for the lowest price fuel. They don't think about octane ratings, top tier, or any of the other factors that folks who frequent forums like this take into account. So we all get fed vehicles off the assembly line that will operate in an open market.

If someone wants the best performance out of their vehicle, they are going to have to go to the 3rd party vendors. In a way, that is a better thing. Then you can get the results you want and are willing to pay for.
 
But wouldn't both higher power and MPG sell more cars? Often the MPG gain more than offsets the price of 87 vs 91

Some claim that ethanol lowers gas mileage between 2-7%. The increased cost is about 9.4%. Some also claim that ethanol is bad for older cars, cars after 2001 were supposed to be ok for E15, but thankfully that never passed. A borderline no.

What increased cost? The ethanol futures price is substantially less than gasoline. It's still less than $2/gallon Ethanol is also an octane booster, so the mixture of base gasoline can be of a lower octane rating.

I certainly understand that back when gas was $1.50/gallon, the use of ethanol did increase the price of fuel.

Exactly! OP you need to listen to these guys as they are spot on.

If the car is not designed to run on 91-93 Octane( and unless your 300 is an SRT I don't see a car in that sig that is ), or you are running some kind of performance tuner on a high octane setting, you most likely will see lower MPG. No performance gain either and possibly less. Modern computer controlled EFI engines don't respond to octane changes the way old carb'd ones do. They run best on the octane they were designed for and when you go above or below that octane range it hurts performance and MPG.

Running 93 octane non ethanol gas in a car designed for 87-89 octane won't benefit you over running 87/89 E10. No MPG gains and no HP gains.

That's a pretty good summation of the situation. The automakers are building cars for the lowest common denominator. While the ECU on most modern vehicles will retard the spark from some standard setting to minimize knocking, the ECU will not advance the spark past the standard setting to take advantage of a tank of high-octane gasoline. The higher octane gasoline may not hurt anything, but you probably won't get much benefit.

You just have to run three tanks of the 93 pure gas to know.

Running pure gas vs a mix gives a few more BTU's per gallon.

There is no rocket science involved.

The 1992 454 (7.4L) in the motor home will make more HP and better MPG on 93 pure gas.

There seem to be no advantage to running it in the 2000 4.6L engine in the Towncar.

If after the 3rd tank of pure gas you do not see/feel do what YOU want to do.

It is about $0.70 a gallon more here. If it was only 33 cents I would only buy 93 pure gas for everything we have that runs on gas. Typically premium gas has more cleaners in it as well. At least that is the case with Shell gases.

Let us know what you think after three tanks of pure 93 gas.

There is no on on this board can answer your question in your case with validity.

While I agree you may see little to know difference in your case you will not know until you spend a few extra dollars to test it.

In our case we can run premium for about what it cost to add a can of Seafoam so premium cost is a wash if trying to clean up dirty injectors.

Pure gas will not contain water because it will stay in the tank in the ground because it can not mix with pure gas but water does blend in with the gas that contains ethanol.
 
You guys know though that most if not all Manufactures get their SAE HP ratings while using Premium fuel right?

Not all cars "require" premium gas. This is true. BUT with todays technology with VVT, forced induction, DI to name a few, The use of premium fuel may be beneficial. Granted your car can run on 87 but if your car has any of the above technologies, your car MAY benefit from premium fuel.

If those benefits being smoother running engine due to timing advance, better throttle response due to timing advance, possible HP and TQ increase and a cleaner motor due to premium fuel containing more cleaning agents (up to 50% more in some cases) then do it.

To some, saving a nickel or a dime here means something. I agree. BUT if your car simply runs better for lets say $2.00 more every time you get gas. Isn't it worth it?

Check most of the gas stations, take your pic. There is only one brand there that I have seen.

You can also buy Leaded race gas here in the Valley that most use in their "stock" race cars. That can be found in El Centro at SOCO Gas on E. Main St. Not sure how much it is per gallon.

As in Mexicali I stopped buying gas there years ago. Car would run like [censored] on it. My Dad would go down and fill up his 60 Bug there so he didn't have to run a Lead Additive. The traffic now is so bad its just not worth it and he just uses the lead additive since the bug doesn't need 100 Octane Leaded race gas from SOCO running a 6 to 1 compression ratio haha.

Lead may not be in our air, but there are many OTHER poisons that are. Thus making the Imperial Valley one of the worst. Its so bad here, we dont even have to smog our cars. Only upon selling used or buying used. Most kids here have Asthma its just sucks. If I could, I would move haha.
