Is the area between the full and add marks on the dipstick equal to 1 quart for a 305 small block Chevy engine?

Approximately. Just add in half-quarts and keep checking the stick.
Get the oil exactly down to the add mark.

Yep. Pretty much exactly accurate too.
My old '78 C10 project truck has that engine and it is a quart from the low to high marks on the dipstick. Doing major cab repairs now, but really like that truck for the 30 years I've had it. Last 7 years it has been off the road. Engine sounds better than my 5.3
, but the power difference is incredible
