I’ve experienced an odd phenomenon ( 2017 Kia Sorento 3.3L V6 GDI) whereby when I read the dipstick after the vehicle has been sitting overnight it shows approximately a quart low. I wipe the dip stick clean then immediately reinsert the dipstick and it reads on the full mark . I do not understand as I’ve never experienced 2 immediate, successive oil dip stick readings give such different results - how do I know the actual oil dip stick reading ?

Are you sure that the dipstick is fully seated before you take the first reading?

Oil is likely being deposited on the tube ID on the first pull.

If you wanna test that theory leave the dipstick out overnight then check

I've always believed in trusting the lower reading, especially in situations where each side disagrees. Physics tend to dictate that's the more trustworthy reading of a fluid level. Also the most accurate reading is probably after everything in the tube (including that which clings to the walls) has had time to drain back. This tends to be a bigger problem on transmissions IMO -- but hey, we're eliminating transmission dipsticks so ignorance is bliss. Woohoo!

Seems like our 12 Sedona did the same thing but not nearly a quart.

I would suggest you check it after sitting overnight the day after an oil change. That way you already know it has the correct oil level because you just put it in. Then you will know which reading is correct.
