What is to be gained at 3k? Oh, the "piece of mind" that comes with OCD rather than the piece of mind that comes with rationality.

Wasn't this the photoshop-ed picture?

Just kidding!

piece of mind, eh? How much are pieces of mind going for these days? My guess is peace of mind is much easier to come by

Also, how does showing a pic of your cam show that your choice of OCI was sufficient to prevent wear? I'm whole-heartedly on the extended OCI band wagon, but posting up pics of "clean" cams doesn't really prove much, IMHO

i'd be under my car every 2 weeks if i did that!

i think there are 3 main factors to consider when deciding oci: manufacturer's recommendations, type of oil used, and how hard your engine is worked.

also 1 last factor (probably less signifigant) is vehicle age

What exactly does that have to do with 3,000 mile oil changes? That's what I thought, nothing.

With most of my cars, i did between 3-4500 mile OCIs mainly due to the short city trips to and from work, rarely get to do highway driving, maybe like once a month when my fiance and I want to goto a mall.

Depends on conditions, type of driving etc. My Jeep Wrangler would get oil changes every 2 weeks as I would easily put 3-4k on dino, that was mostly highway driving as at the time I was going to school. My 01 Impala had 2500-3000 OCI's with m1 because I only commuted 7 miles to work each way lots of stop and go, short trips, I'd make it to work before the car would be warm half the time.

The TC was 6k OCI's on synthetic, and now my Xterra I used Synpower 5w30 and draining it at 3k(this is my first OCI since I bought it used and want to drive it short to take the [censored] out the first owner probably did it to it.) After this OCI, going with the 5k OCI maybe 6k, my TC even with Valvoline after 5k OCI's would start to sound awfully loud, so its going to vary a bit with the Xterra.

I may even switch to conventional YB Pennzoil or Valvoline, but prices around here aren't as great as some have reported elsewhere unfortunately.

i just saw a conoco phillips -Ford moco study on oils causing less engine wear after 3000 miles...it was in the edmunds synthetic oil forum recently...so i think 3 k is way over doing it, go at least 6k, esp if you live in warm climate

great pic of the engine with 10k oci on syntec, impressive...speaking of ocd, i actually do have it...i have been on this stupid site for 3 years

an amsoil rep said something to me about this once. he didn't mention 3k miles, more like around 500 miles but he seemed convinced that oils have a break-in period. it makes sense kinda but i can't back it up with facts.

It ain't the oil; It's what's in the oil and that is unique for each person's vehicle.
