3.7 litre F-150

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I’m coming from camping in a huge old campervan with 140hp towing my boat so I’m thinking “only” 300 hp will be a massive improvement.

I had two Ford F-150 rentals two years ago.

1. F-150 4x4 Crew cab 3.5 eco. A Serious Hot rod for its size and weight.
But left me stranded in Texas when the dash lit up like
Christmas with no throttle.
2.Same but no 4x4 and a 3.7 for power. It seemed to be adequate to
me,I liked it.
After that experience I would stay N/A versus turbo.
This keep in mind coming from a Ridgeline daily driver.

I have the 3.7 in a 2014 F-150 super crew 2wd, 3.75 rearend. I can agree with all others with experience. good mileage ,towing. 2000# will be no problem. I like to use the (manual) transmission setting to control the RPM, especially in the mountains.

If that's the Ecoboost then it's probably one of the worst truck motors out there. Friend is on engine #3. He bought it brand new.

What the [censored] does your friend do to them? I'm on a few F150 boards and the EB, while it did have initial issues (swallowing condensation and timing chain rattles) it's proven to be decent in the 7 years it's been out.

No I’m not talking about the boost. I have no interest in having such a contraption under my hood. Finding a 3.7 is proving to be pretty difficult.

My guess is that he is one of those "oil is a lifetime fluid" guys...

Replacing one engine I can see... replacing 3? Really? That is lemon territory.

Of the Ecoboost "issues" I have had in my fleet, motor mount issues are are the most common. We did have one with a timing issue (jumped) but it is about 85% through its life cycle as an LE vehicle.

I got curious as to the actual torque curve. Found a set here, so I hope they are correct. Looks like a healthy little tick up at 4k but it's not exactly zero torque at 2,000 rpm either. If I eyeball the motor and call it 250 ft-lb, then the 3.7L V6 has to spin about 1.6x what a 5.0L would have to spin at (400/250), or upwards of 2x what the EB might have to spin at, in order to do the same amount of work (hp).

Excellent chart. Thanks for thepost. I believe the top chart should be labeled as horsepower not torque, but the info is excellent. I’m surprised by how flat the torque curve is for the 3.7.

Yeah, whoever made that chart is as good at making labeling mistakes as I am.

It's amazing today how flat torque curves can be made. Tie one of those motors to today's 82 speed transmissions, and you can really dial in the exact rpm & throttle required to get a desired output. All OEM's have to do is up the NVH, maybe hide the tachometer, and we'd be amazed at what today's low power engines are capable of doing.

I am aware that the 3.7 is less powerful than the 5.0 or the EB. That’s the whole idea of getting one. I don’t like to buy more than I need. Test drove one finally and it seemed nice. Held top gear on the highway better than the ram 3.6 but perhaps that’s due to the 6 speed vs the ram’s 8 speed. You seem to get a lot more features in a v6 ram for the money.

Yeah for the money, the V6 Ram is pretty hard to beat. I had one as a rental in Colorado, and even in those high elevations it performed well.

You guessed wrong. Dude is more meticulous than I am, and I am pretty OCD when it comes to maintenance and repair.

Drives and tows within the limits of the vehicle?

Got to be something or he's the most unlucky guy on the planet. We work ours towing a heavy camper and it's going strong at 87k. I could see 1 engine, but 3? Seomtthing is either user or dealer error or something else wrong.

Yeah, I am not quite buying that...

First, getting a Ford Dealer to do warranty work is tough and a long wait. Technically (if it was my dealer), even after 7 years he should be waiting on engine #2. I was just quoted a 2-week wait to replace a wheelbearing

Maybe, MAYBE he is getting substandard repairs on his truck, otherwise three engines is a tough sell. One replacement engine, sure... but two? That screams abuse... or really shoddy mechanics.
