Took in the jeep for the pentastar tick under warranty, jeep replaced all cams lifters and rocker arms and rear main seal. When I inspected the cams they were ground down pretty badly. There a star report that advises engine replacement when this metal gets sent thru engine ? What do yall think ?

My buddy has a 2006? Jetta TDI with the cam lobes worn down like that, but worse and it is still going with over 200k miles on it, so maybe the metal gets mostly trapped in the filter before much damage is done?

How was the engine running otherwise? Have you brought it up to the service dept? I've seen engines run good under worse wear, but id still ask them what's up.
It was ticking hard, not for long maybe 2 weeks before I realized the noise. And just had warped cylinder last year due to thermostat. I just keep reading about this problem with this engine and if it covered and necessary than I ll press the issue with them. There gonna drop the oil pan and check for metal and was surprised to see the grinding on the mfs.

Worn down like that with a Star Bulletin recommending engine replacement, I think they're right. It's a safe bet that not all of that metal was filtered out, and you have no idea what kind of damage it might have caused while circulating in the engine.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, this is the only cam lobe that looks to be damaged.

The other grind marks I highlighted one and I presume OP is referring to them.
These are from the manufacturing process, these cam shafts are cast and the grinding marks are from removing the cast flashing. These marks are not from operating the engine.

Wait, they still offer a warranty on an 8 year old car with 140k miles?
Luckily I bought the mopar lifetime warranty when I bought the jeep. Best $3500 I ever spent. They will fix this thing until the repair bill is more than the jeep. Once that happens they pay you the value of vehicle instead of repair and the warranty is over. The paperwork literally says 1 million miles

Hell if that’s the case I would spend the 3500 for reinsurance.

Poor heat treatment of the pin in the roller followers.
I guess this is why Detroit Diesel didn't go with roller bearings in their series 53, 71 and 92 engines. Reliability.

I remember reading an article, many years ago, when roller rockers were becoming popular in HO race engines. They discussed the use of roller bearings versus bushings in rockers and followers. They were also referencing their use in passenger vehicles when the use of roller followers were becoming popular. Their conclusion was for longevity, roller bearings should NEVER be deployed. Roller bearings are very sensitive to their environment. Namely the condition of the oil they run in.

I realize the problems we are experiencing are more contributed to metallurgy and hardening and I cannot understand why manufacturers can't get it right since this isn't bleeding edge technology? But, I never understood the use of roller bearings for street use. Bragging rights?

It's not just the metallurgy. The pin the roller bearings ride on has a very small diameter, so you can only fit few of them in there, which means that the full load of the cam lobe pressing against the outer roller is ultimately spread around on two or three roller bearings at a time.

The engineers understand all of it fully, but are constrained by packaging and always trying to increase the fuel economy. Unfortunately the compromise they came up with, is not a reliable solution.
