I’m very confused. Just got a 26 Prius , non plug in model. Under the hood it states 0 W 16.
Owners manual says 0 W 8. It says you can use 0 W 8 but it Must be replaced with 0 W 8 at next oil change. WHAT ?????????

It says you can use 0 W 16 but it must be replaced with 0 W 8 at next oil change. The same wording is in my RAV4 manual except is says to use 0w16 and you can use 0w20 but it must be replaced with 0w16 at next oil change. I've only used 0w20 in it and it has 140,000 miles on it now.

It talks about the "availability" & perhaps that may be the drive for the manual confusion? 0w-16 more common for now? I'd just use the 0w-16 due to that reason alone.

Bob's correct; Toyota have been writing this way for at least 20 years. "Use this but go a grade thicker if you 'can't find it.'"

If I had a car with 0w-8 right now I’d probably use 0w-16 just because I really haven’t seen 0w-8 at all in Walmart or Canadian Tire. Even 0w-16 up here doesn’t offer up many options. I really wouldn’t want to buy the oil from the dealership 😳

I take the Toyota statement as a self-acknowledged Mea Culpa for embracing CAFE.

Others will disagree.
I figured its because 0w12 is about as rare as 0w8, and 0w16 not surprisingly has more availability.
but that means the manual has to make sense... ;) 🥴

I have never seen 0W8 at a Canadian retail location. I called Canadian Tire corporate and sugggested they add it given how many Toyota vehicles now list it in the owners manual.

In the meantime, my local Mobil/Esso distributor carries Mobil 1 0W8. They sell it to the public for $13.75/quart in 3x5 quart boxes. Much better than the $22/quart Saskatchewan Toyota dealers charge for TGMO 0W8.

That’s a crazy price when you can get other viscosities on sale at Canadian Tire for $40 for 5 quarts.

Mine - 0W-16 spec - says "next oil change" in the manual.

However in the maintenance log it says this on every 5K service - "NOTE: If 0W-16 oil WAS NOT used at the last oil change, replace engine oil and oil filter."

The OCI is 10K so there is an in between service - check fluids, etc. So it tells the dealer if 0W-20 was used last then change to 0W-16 early at 5K OCI.

I of course alleviate all of these confusions by simply running 5W-30 @5K OCI.

All that has zero to do with any technical requirement and everything to do with regulation. You can run the engine on any grade.

And pick any winter rating that’s acceptable for your starting temperature.

The 2025s I looked at had a 0w8 sticker under the hood.
