24hp B&S twin oil suggestions

Just bought my first lawn "tractor" book calls for straight 30wt in summer months, i already changed the oil with cheap sae 30wt for a flush, the tractors 3 years old with 84 hrs on it. when i put good oil in, whats a favorite flavor for lawn tractors ?

I would use Mobil 1 5w30. 20 years on my Honda mower and counting.

I'll be the first of the massive number of people suggesting some flavor of Rotella. 10-30 sounds good to me.

I would use the Amsoil 30w-10/30 weight.

I use Rotella T straight 30 Wt. HDEO in my 24hp Br.& Str.

Straight 30 (Rotella, natch) seems to be the best bet for big B&S engines. I've tried 10-30 (yep, Rotella) but it seemed to generate a fair amount of smoke at startup.

I agree with straight 30 in any regularly available quality brand, i.e. Shell, Mobil, Delvac, etc.

I buy Royal Purple 10w30 (PAO API SL) from WalMart for my Briggs 20 HP V-twin along with the Briggs 2x oil filter.

After close to one season it is performing extremely well and I am very pleased with the oil. I change it at the end of the season...and the end of July.

One thing about these engines...some had problems with the air filter's seal not doing it's job...keep an eye on it...I service that 2-3x/season.

Briggs Extended Series engines have had problems also with smoking at start-up and many required engine replacements unfortunately I read on a tractor forum.. Mine smoked a bit during break-in...but after switching over to Royal Purple...and after completing breaking in...not a wisp of smoke....


By the way...one flush with this engine is not enough...I did 2-3 with 30wt conventional oil...always had some silverish sheen to the oil...

I have a Yardman, 46" cut with a B&S Intek twin rated at 22 HP. Had it since 05 and run it year around on B&S 5W30 synthetic. Never a problem. Used year around to cut grass in the warm months and plow snow during the winter. Sure B&S synthetic is expensive but it is the right grade (not an SM oil) and if you smoke a twin cylinder Intek a replacement can cost you more than what the original tractor cost. I paid under $1K for this tractor at Meijer (midwest retailer and a real good alternative to Walmart) in 2005. A replacement Intek twin runs almost $1K too. With the lawn and garden tractors you want to take good care of the motors and the deck which are the two (2) most costly items. I do one change of oil per season running synthetic.

well, i got the >generic 30wt< at the tractor shop, i know i can be doing better, Rotella been getting alot of good reviews on BITOG in many different applications My only fear with going with say a 5-30 is the book says it will cause consumption.. I know i dont always follow the books, thats why i turn to BOB. Also i checked the air filter, the filter was good, the screen under the filter had some buildup. I blew em both out with the compressor, Greased everything and cut my new yard yesterday 3 acres, She cut like a champ ! got home and installed the spare blades i just had sharpenned.. looking forward to my next cut !
