Hi,

I have heard and read that the new 2026 Mazda 3 is now being built in Japan. Anyone here can confirm?

Thanks
Michael

Yes, they were or are made in Japan & Mexico...Then I've heard that the Hatchbacks were/are made in Mexico and the Sedans in Japan but, IDK!

In 2018(keep this year in mind), I was looking for a good used car for our daughter so, I was test driving everything that looked decent from private owners, dealers, rental sales. She had been driving a(made in Japan) 2006 Mazda3i/auto sedan w/~170,000 miles that she had been driving for 9 years.

In one instance, we went to one of our local HERTZ Rental Sales lots and tested two(same color & trim level) 2016 Mazda3i- Sport Sedans w/2.0L/Auto Trans. Both had 40Kish miles and a CarFaxReport with them. Both cars were listed for ~$11500.

As we were test driving these two cars on the same route, I noticed that one of them just felt that little better, a little bit tighter, spunkier and better put together. We drove them back-to-back and we both switched driving. We were gone for quite some time in both cars, getting in & out and looking around the vehicles, checking under the hood, sitting in the back seats, looking in the trunk & glove box and for missing things like a spare tire & jack, owner's manual etc.

During both drives, I asked my her to look at the CarFax to see if there was a final assembly plant listed, even though it probably stated so on one of the body tags. And sure enough, the car that came from Japan was the example that felt that little bit better, smoother, spunkier and just better put together.

What does all of this mean?--- In this case, NOTHING! They're rental cars with 40K miles on them. And it could have gone the other way around where the Mexican built Mazda3 felt better and there are too many variables to consider when looking at rental cars. Maybe if they were both brand new cars on the dealer lot, it could have/would have made a difference.

We chose neither and walked away and found a one owner 2015 Civic LX w/1.8L/CVT with 17700 miles on the odometer for ~12500($1000 more the the one year newer Mazda3) and clean CarFax/AutoCheck reports...in 2018(3 yrs.old). She drove this Civic for 3 years without incident and put on herself ~43000 miles(total 61K) until it got rear ended/totaled...that's another story!

I owned a 2012 that was made in Japan. In 2016 I hit a deer with it and caused extensive damage. Insurance paid for the repair but I just didn't want it anymore so I went to trade it for a new one. That's when I discovered all the 2016 models available here in KY were from the Mexican plant. That's the reason I ended up with a 6 instead, because they were only being made in Hiroshima.

At some point around 2021 I started thinking about trading mine for an automatic so I started looking at the local dealer websites again and that's when I saw that there were a small number of Japanese 3's among the Mexican ones. I wondered at the time if the Covid shortages had prompted the decision to start bringing them in from Japan again?

Are any of the current ones listed with the 2.0 or have they all transitioned to the 2.5 now? My 3 with a 2.0L and 6MT got almost 40 mpg!

The Hatch were made in Mexico for a few years. Not sure about now.

Great cars. Only downside is the rear torsion beam suspension and dated 6spd (good one though).

I have a 2012 and the 2.0 has more than enough power for the nature of local driving. Most cars are faster but practically no one knows how to accelerate. I was disappointed to learn that, yes, the 2.5 is now the only option in the Mazda3. That knocks it off my potential next car list as the current version gets 3 mpg less than the one I have. Back in 2012 the Skyactiv Mazda3 produced the best fuel economy for ICE vehicles. The competition caught up and 40 mpg highway is now common. I seek to use LESS fuel, not more.

Given how much the Japanese Yen has gotten devalued over the years, making something in Japan isn't as expensive as it was. it'll surpise a lot of people but Japan has had 30 years of economic malaise.

Now it's more of doing the math of shipping costs v. excess capacity v. sales volume v. suppliers base, etc.

All the 2026 3's (both sedans & hatchbacks) at my local dealership are J VIN's.

They also lost auto start/stop and cylinder deactivation this year in the non-turbo models.

Sweet!!!

Our previous CX30 was made in Mexico. I picked up 25' CX5 last week and was happy to see that it's made in Japan. I decided that a tried and true drivetrain would be perfect for a college student. Gotta love the 0% financing(y)

I have a 25 3 and cx30 (both NA). Neither came with auto start/stop. Both, however, have cylinder deactivation. In the 3 it is seamless and I have never felt any indication of activation or deactivation. The CX30 you feel something like a very slight miss when it activates. Very subtle and hardly noticeable and I completely space it out after a while.
