Ok go easy on me, it's been a decade since I've been in a Honda. I brought home a new Passport black Friday, has the J35Y8 and I grabbed a couple oil filters from the dealer while I was there. Now surfing the forums I'm getting the impression that the blue Honda filters aren't what they used to be and are basically trash. I'm planning a early drain at around 1K, should I be looking at at Mobil 1 or Wix filters instead? Hit me with the best filter and I'll grab a half dozen and call it a day.

Thanks!

You already got a couple filters.. they aren't horrible so I would just use them. After that if you aren't worried about warranty just get one of the Premium Guard made filters locally which would be Advance Auto Carquest Premium 84356 , Oreilly Microgard Select MSL57356 and the Autozone STP Extended S7317XL. These have the best reputation for consistent quality and they have pretty much the best build out there IMO.

Happy Honda Days :D

The OE A02 has been Fram for awhile. There is nothing wrong with the A02, but the PH7317 is just as good for less money. The TG7317 is about the same price as the OE A02 but much better.

There is no need to stock up on filters because they are widely available and not expensive.

Honda doesn't want you to do the first OCI early. They want you to wait until it says 15% or a year.

Hope it does well for you.. I'm planning on pulling the trigger on a Pilot in 6ish months.. Want a 26 in that new Green color with the tan/black interior.

What color combo you go for?

I'd use the filters you got. I'll likely use OEM filters while mine is under warranty. They're not the best but they aren't going to hurt anything either IMO.

I got the Trailsport Elite in sunset orange with black interior.

I recently switched to using this Pentius filter. Its construction is very similar to the Carquest Premium and Microgard Select. The case price was $55 not that long ago. Not sure I'd purchase them again, just because they're not a "name brand", but definitely one of the best on the market for a Honda today.

Definitely do an early oil change, or several within the first 10k. I bought a 2025 Pilot Elite in May, and have come to the realization that Honda doesn't give a rats' rear-end if your engine lasts hundreds of thousands of miles. As far as they're concerned, it only needs to get out of their warranty period. Start using an oil known to control carbon deposits on rings. Had I not already bought five cases of HPL, I'd probably run Valvoline Restore and Protect at a maximum 5k OCI, if not 3k, regardless what oil life the OLM shows.

I usually do one at 1k and then 5k. Then every 5k after that. I always know when I'm due and I usually only do about 7500 miles a year (ish).

And I just found the Honda filter thread, my apologies if the mod's want to lock this thread I'm good.

I'm going with 'imo' a current safe pick when recommending to others here. AAP CQ Premium 84356. Check Retailmenot.com for 15% off code no min., with online ordering.

Congrats on new ride, hope you enjoy it for a long time.

The Honda OEM filters are very basic Fram units and aren’t the best.

The best filters right now are made by Premium Guard (“PG” acronym here). These also include Napa Gold, Ecoguard, Carquest Premium, and Pentius. Just buy the “premium” version of any of these if you want the best.

Mobil1’s newer filters not made in the US are also looking good right now. Walmart’s ST line is also decent for the price.

Purolator One can be OK as long as you inspect it first for open louvers but you’ll get flamed if you mention using it.

Avoid Fram’s spin-on filters (cartridge based media is still ok). Avoid Bosch. Avoid Wix.

I’ve decided to use the Carquest Premium 84356 and Valvoline Restore and Protect in my new Ridgeline. With good preventative maintenance, I expect it to last a long time. Mine was a CPO with 4,000 miles on it. The dealer had already changed the oil before I bought it. I changed it again at 5,000 and did the rear diff since the code came up too for that oil change. Easy to work on too!
