Hello all! I’ve been a lurker of BITOG for at least a decade, though my recent membership says otherwise. A little background on me, I’ve owned 35+ vehicles over the last 16 years, but I’m working on making that a thing of the past and keep my vehicles long term. Even with my excessive amount of vehicle swapping, I’ve always prided myself in trying to do the best maintenance and best practices I could do for each. That being said, I ended up on the Amsoil bandwagon about 5 years ago both for their quality as well as the convenience of shipped to my door and their all-encompassing oil change kits, but I’ve more recently learned about their QC issues with oil filters due to the Champ Labs/First Brands fiasco, so this along with the mindset that I want to keep my current vehicles long term have made me start digging even deeper into what maintenance items I use. I’ve tried my best to search both on here as well as on YouTube, but my head has started spinning, so I figured it might not hurt to just start my own thread to hopefully get the answers I’m looking for…

Sorry about the long preamble…

I live in Alabama, so it’s hot/warm most of the year and I currently have a 2025 GMC 1500 with the 5.3/L84 with the DFM disabled with a Range device as well as an oil catch can (also have a daily driver 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5 that I’m not as worried about, but it gets 0w-20 Amsoil XL and filter). I purchased it as a dealer demo with ~5,000 miles and it had its first oil change at that time by the dealer. I have 3 free oil changes from the dealer, but with the L87 oil viscosity change coupled with my want to do what’s “best” (not to mention my disdain for others working on my vehicles and getting dirt and grease on interior surfaces, etc.), I’m considering forgoing those free oil changes and going with the products I choose to use.

Again, I typically would go with the AMSOIL Signature Series kit, but they only recommend the GM recommended 0w-20 and their filters are questionable at best currently. I’d be perfectly fine just ordering the oil from Amsoil and then going to the parts store to get the filter. If I go that route, should I go with SS 0w-40? What filter should I go with l? (I stick to ~5,000 OCI, but am happy to pay more for a better filter capable of exceeding that interval). Or is there an off the shelf oil that would better suit my needs? Sorry for the long post, I’m just trying to give as much background information as possible!

I am a huge fan of the Premium Guard manufacture filters. As far as brands, you can get an STP XL from AutoZone, Carquest EP from Advanced Auto Parts, or Micro Guard Select from O'Reilly's and you should be good to go.

Why not split the difference and go with a quality 5w30 oil? There are so many to choose from and GM smallblocks used to use 5w30 forever. Even my 2014 Chevy SS Sedan with the LS3 6.2 smallblock spec was 5w30 Mobil 1.

I’m not opposed to going with 5w-30, I was just going with the mindset of if 0w-40 was what was now recommended for the L87’s, it should be what I consider for my L84. I will admit that I am a bit apprehensive of running a viscosity that’s different than OEM spec while I’m under warranty, but I’m sure that’s a risk that I’m over thinking. I guess as long as the oil meets the dexos1 spec.

Thanks for the filter recommendations!

Congrats on the new truck. I debated between the 5.3L and 3.0L Duramax when getting my 2024 Silverado last year. Decided I wanted SuperCruise which required the 3.0L and that made the decision for me.

As for oil changes, I also go through a lot of vehicles, which means most of my oil changes are within warranty. So I tend to stick with OEM oil spec and use OEM filters. However, I try to keep OCI under 5000 miles. I realize there are better oils, viscosities, and filters out there but don't worry about not having the best. I find more comfort knowing my warranty won't be challenged and that I likely won't keep the vehicle much beyond 100,000 miles anyway.

Thanks! I’m typically a “Ford guy”, but the the equivalently optioned F150 to this was ~$10-12k more, so figured I’d give the GMC a try.

But yeah, sticking with OE spec oil for warranty purposes is probably the smart thing to do… 🫠

This is my first GM product. So far I’ve been pleased. I’ve had mostly Fords and Toyotas. At the time, the F150 redesign just hit (no deals) and the Tundra 3.4L engine fiasco just hit. Plus, I have 3 coworkers who have been hit with cam-phaser and transmission issues on recent F150’s.

They all have their issues it seems. People really talk up the Toyota 5.7L, but I wasn’t too impressed with my Tundra. It rode and drove and drank fuel like a 3/4 ton without the cargo and towing capacity. It also got the dreaded cam tower leak at 40k miles just out of warranty.

So what GM truck V8’s have 0W-40 as FF?

Not FF to my knowledge, but the recall released in April of this year called for an inspection followed by a viscosity change from 0w-20 to 0w-40 on 21-24 L87’s. Though the engine failure issues have been seen to affect 25-26 models as well.

Have a link to that 25-26 claim?
And a link to the L84 issues calling for 0W-40?

Never said there was anywhere officially calling for the L84 to run 0w-40…

And no links on the 25-26’s, just have seen more than a handful of posts in the Tahoe/Yukon and Silverado/Sierra groups I’m in with engine failures and being left stranded on vacations, etc.

The -40 grade isn’t going to harm the engine in any way. In fact, it will do the opposite. The only negative will be an increase in fuel consumption of about 2-3%.

Use the Amsoil product if you want or one of the excellent varieties available at Walmart.

After doing some more reading on various previous threads on here, I’m now leaning towards going with SS 0w-30 as a “happy medium” of sorts.. thoughts?

It doesn’t matter. Besides it’s really the higher HT/HS, not the grade that helps reduce wear and provide a cushion against any fuel dilution. You don’t have to have a “medium”, the -40 grade is fine.

I switched to 5w-40 in my 2021 escalade within a year of getting it new. I didn't keep receipts either. Someone on here posted their dealer experience and they never asked for receipts or gave any warranty issue with their engine. It's the 6.2 that's having issues. The 5.3 is spared.

I would run Mobil 1 0w40 and hope for the best.
I am going to add something to the above........Delvac 1300 10w30, due to the climate of the OP. SP rated for direct injection engines, HTHS of 3.6.....and cheaper than Mobil 1 0w40 and AMSOIL Signature Series........way cheaper than both
