The owners manual suggest 0w20, 50% thicker (m1 esp 0w30) should be sufficient even for track if his oil temps are controlled.
likely the brakes will be the limiting factor by far.. without upgrades.

But in this case the differences between 0w30 esp and 0w40 esp are fairly small.

the 0w40 hths is 3.8 vs 0w30 greater than 3.5
13.8cst@100c vs 12cst@100c

So in reference to these 2 oils I'd say throw a dart or whatever floats the OP's boat.

The WRX calls for 0W-20? Strange, as my wife’s 2024 Outback XT turbo requires 5W-30.

I would just get the tune. If you are tracking it, there is a good chance that is considered abuse and kicks it out of warranty anyways. At least that seems like Toyota's approach with GR86 thus far

No Subaru. They've come out to events like WickedBigMeet and said track/auto-x is not abuse as long as you're not money-shifting.

With 2k miles on it, I’m not sure why you haven’t changed the original fill. I would dump it asap.

Swapped out initial FF at 995 miles. This was my 2nd oil change at 3032 miles.

On track, oils that are Porsche A40 or C40 approved. So X4.

As for brakes, he has Brembo set up. Only thing he needs is better fluid (Motul RBF 660 or 700, Endless, ATE TYP200), and track/racing pads. He is good with caliper/rotor set up.

Indeed. Thank you. I actually put in Castrol SRF. Stupid pricey so I might drop back down to Motul RBF 660 but at the same time, I feel like I can maybe eek out a longer session or a short track day.

Nice! The Brembos are just what the WRX needed.

I bought a 2016 WRX new and owned it for 3 years. No track use, but drove it pretty hard in the mountains and on backroads.

The brakes were wholly inadequate for the speeds and cornering ability it was capable of.

Really enjoyed the flat cornering ability and planted feel of the low center of gravity. There really is something to the longitudinal flat four and AWD. Really excellent balance.

Sold it when I got married back in 2020. Perfect, 43,000 mile, non-modified example. The kid couldn’t drive stick when he bought it. He ended up modding it, then totaling it.

I missed having a fun, turbo, manual car, so I got an Elantra N a year ago and I’ve really loved it. Even has room for 3 child safety seats across the back (we have 4 kiddos under 5). The 2, 3, and 4 year old love riding in it. They say “its fast”, lol.

I’ve been using M1 ESP 0W-30 at 5000 mi intervals. Recently did the first change of the gearbox oil and went with Red Line Oil MTL. I think it improved feel a bit.

Love the car! Would enjoy hearing more of your thoughts on it.

I'm in the NNJ area. The Elentra N was actually on my list when I was shopping for the car. Only issue was that I wanted to finance and the 6.5x% interest turned me off. Especially when Subaru was offering 0.9% for 72 months. The other was the CTR but MSRP mark-up was stupid at the time.

As for the WRX, I love it. I'm still getting used to the handling mechanics on the track but after I stiffened it up a little bit, its gotten flatter.

That is incorrect. It calls for 0W-20. It has the option for 5W-30 but it recommends 0W-20. I have a 2025 Outback XT as well.
