New truck. I sampled the oil at 2,000 original miles and changed the GM air and oil filters to Wix XP then drove another 2,000 miles. I resampled the oil for a second UOA. No oil change as yet. No added oil. It is about half a quart low on the oil stick. It looks fairly clean. Do I continue or change the oil?

Nice truck, test drove a navigator before buying my 2021 escalade esv also a 2wd but I don't like the way turbo engines drive. But why change the air filter? it's brand new and filters the same. I still have my factory one on at 43k miles since it's still not restricted. I'm still waiting to use the air filter I bought for it though I experienced the same with my yukon where the filter didn't start to restrict until 50k miles. The cabin filter was changed at 38k but it was barely dirty and the air flow was identical so not restricted either though I usually use recirc so that helps it.

Though there are 4,000 miles on both the engine and the oil, the oil samples each have 2,000 miles on them. What I see here is that there are few additional wear metals on the second sample. Almost if the engine is already broken in. The iron only went up 3 PPM for example during the second 2,000mi interval.

I wondered if the silicon might get filtered out some. The GM oil filter is 30u and the WIX is 20u (I think).

Same for the air filtration. I thought maybe the WIX might filter better and there would be no extra Si. It was practically unchanged. I did keep the OEM air filter to use at a later time. If I conclude it was about the same filtration as the WIX, I will put it back in when it's time for a new one.

Of course all this assumes the UOAs were accurate and a useful indicator. I did not cut open the original oil filter as it would not tell us much. But I will cut this one open just for S&G.

I did just change the oil and oil filter. This time a Motorcraft filter left over from my Navigator - same size.

Results may be better as this with the total oil milage changed:

XP is far from a 20um filter.

Any silicon showing up in a UOA will not be filtered out.

Former Manufacturering Engineering who worked on L86 to L87 converstion on the 6.2, and the LT4 Car and Truck Varients. On all my new cars I change the oil at 1000 miles. White UOA is great to detect small particles, manufacturing sediment will not appear and is a real thing.

Why would you change the air filter in a new vehicle. The factory filter is better than the one you put in!
I was thinking the same thing. I am not a fan of doing frequent air filter changes. They filter better as they get older and they take a long time to get plugged up. I’m still on the original filter in my Corvette actually, with over 106,000 km on it now. The filter isn’t easy to change and it isn’t cheap either.

I changed the air filter because I felt the WIX may have a lower micron rating to start with. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. Also I always wonder if the filter on delivery of the car was set in correctly with the best seal. It seems as an issue from time to time. I guess I could have just removed it and put it back a little more carefully.

Should be an aluminum block with iron sleeves - will make some ppm of iron for up to 20k … that’s pretty normal

Nice ride - be careful not to ding it with a long doored Italian car 😉
