2024 GMC Sierra with 3.0 Duramax diesel. At 11820 miles on truck took a oil sample with 4500 miles on the oil using amsoil 0w-20 diesel oil. They flagged a few things so we changed the oil and took another same at 17,000 miles with about 4500 on the oil again. The wear metals just about exactly the same and they didn't flag anything this time.

What's your take on these samples. Wear metals seem little high to me for the milage but with a truck with only 17k it can still be breaking in a little.

Curious what your thoughts your thoughts are.

It has been discussed on here the idea of using 5w30 C3 or Dexos 2 in these engines with a significant reduction in wear and oil consumption. If it were me I’d be running a synthetic 10w30 CK-4 oil and changing it every 10k miles.

Either of these options will likely be an improvement in wear metals and engine longevity from using Dexos D 0w20.

I have a 2.8 Duramax the engine Is completely stock and I’ve only used 5w40 CJ-4 oil in it since the first oil change and I always have lower wear metals than the average. This is with a 10k-11k oil change interval as well.

9.3 for the viscosity? That is interesting in short mileage for the grade. If you don't start seeing a decrease in wear rates then try a thicker grade. It is elevated but w/early miles still most likely break-in period. Keep testing to see what you can find out.

Updated oil reports. One with amsoil one with HPL. Still high iron at 22k miles on the engine. Debating about trying the hpl 5w-30 but still not sure about it as cold temps running in NY and traveling and such. An 0w-30 dexos D would be nice too if it was made.

I'm with CleverUser here. A 20 grade oil for a diesel is not ideal for wear. BTW all my diesels get a Fully Synthetic 5W-40. For top ups I sometimes cheat a little and use conventional 15W-40.

Mobil makes an 0w30 ESP formula. There is also the Mobil 0w40 ESP which is barely a 40 wt and HTHS is 3.5. Its also Dexos 2.

HPL also makes a cold climate 0w30 as well. Your not going to find a DexosD 0w30 and may need to improvise if you want the wear metals to decrease.
