2023 Toyota Rav tire help

Man I’m thinking you guys have me talked into the Crossclimate 2.. Sam’s has them and my wife and daughter live there.. such a weird looking tire?? You really think there good in snow and in rain?? She’s driving a lot of turnpike and 376 into Pittsburgh.
I hear ya. I’ll throw my suggestion out to the wolves of bitog.
Where I live in rural BC, I go with the tires with the deepest tread and toughest sidewalls turning everything into a bro-truck in the process.
For winter, my daughter’s 2022 Acadia has 245/70r17E General Arctic with a 16/32 tread.
Perfect for deep snow, slush, hydroplane and puncture resistance.
Userfriendly would do what userfriendly does and go with either Yokohama AT4s or Toyo AT3s D rated , both have 16/32 tread depth and 3pms rubber.

Whatever happened to the “Buy American” concept? Doesn’t apply to tires?

Yeah those ‘cross climate would be a great choice, especially when not really needing dedicated Winter tires. Not sure who was first but now there are copycats out there.

Followed up by the Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread.

219 at Sam’s and I think there is a 70 rebate.. just want her to have a good tire..
Do you have a Costco membership? Check there because of the free installation. the deals rotate between Michelin and Bridgestone but normally 80-100 off when it's Michelins cycle.

Also check at Sam's in PA if they have a comment about road hazard. This is on Sam's website so you should be OK. ** Road hazard protection not available in New York for new tire purchases after 2/28/25.

What happens if you buy a tire in PA and need road hazard replacement in NY on a trip? Kind of messed up I think.

My sister has CC2 on her Rav4 Hybrid a bit further upstate NY. She never got winter tires or rims for it. She can also WFH if bad out. My brother-in-law has them as his 3 season on Tiguan after driving hers in heavy rains. He still runs winter as he has rims and needs to go to work even if plows have not been out.

My daughters boyfriend just bought 4 CC2's for his Sonata based on reviews and my added input. He needs to drive to PA and upstate NY frequently but not ready to make the full winter plunge yet.

Get her a second set of wheels (you can buy used wheels with cosmetic blemishes, or take off wheels) and put an actual winter tire for winter conditions. Buy the proper Toyota TPMS sensors, so that you can initialize the sensors yourself through the instrument cluster. Going up steep hills with AWD is not a big issue. Going down said hills with control is a bigger issue.

Then you can save the 3-season tires/wheels for the 3-seasons, and use the winter set for winter, and be nice enough to store the extra set in your garage for your daughter.

My understanding of AT tires getting 3MPSF rating is that is geometry of tread more than rubber compound.
Hence push for ice rating where the compound effects can be measured (I guess no rating for studded tires).

The Sienna has some Falken Pro G5’s which are holding up well and wearing nicely after 20,000 miles. No complaints so far. Picked up for $900 out the door from DT with the installation, road hazard warranty and life time rotations during a holiday sale.

Hello all, I would appreciate some opinions.. my daughter will be driving about 40 miles to Pittsburgh a few times a week for work. We just sold her my wife’s 23 Rav all wheel drive.. I want to put her a good tire for driving down the turnpike and the parkway.. I’m thinking something a little better than an all season. Thinking maybe nitto nomad grappler?? Or a Faulkner?? What’s good. ?? Thanks
I myself would stay away from off brands like Nitto, Cooper, Falken, ext.

My wife's Rav4 has Continental Control Contact Plus, but are discontinued. Even with 1/2 tread they perform excellent for all-season tires in Minnesota winters. When these are gone I will be putting on Michelin CrossClimate 3's. My advice would be go with top name brand tires. Contenental, Michelin, Goodyear, Pirelli, Nokian, ect,

Here is a group test that may help you decide. A VERY good test if you don't know which way to go.

Watch the whole video as in the back half they have snow performance and adding summer and winter to their pick for the best tires.

You guys are awesome thanks for all the great ideas.. we actually live near seven springs ski resort.. I’m good to drive with anything but my daughter just graduated from west Virginia and has to drive from up here to Pittsburgh and surrounding areas a few days a week. I want to put the best on her vehicle. Thanks everyone’s opinion is appreciated..
Michelin CrossClimate 2.
Don’t go AT tires. They move forward, but as you know, name of the game in winter is stopping. AW or true snow tires are much, much better in that performance category.
Michelin will last longer and keep initial performance longer than other competitors.
But, they are expensive.
Other all weather tires from Bridgestone, Pirelli, Nokian, Good Year, maybe General. But, CC2 is the bestseller for a reason.

Continental LX-25's will serve her well. It takes a heck of a snow to fluster them. Watch Tire Rack and Discount Tire for the double rebates. After 22K miles mine still drive straight and true and balance perfectly. Is the Rav4 AWD?

Pretty sure Nokian was under the radar with their original WR tires back in the early 2000's

But for the "farm tractor tire" inspired tread design? That was Michelin with the CrossClimate

Answer back from Sam's club below. What state-specific regulations changed? Costco is still offering it, I haven't checked BJ's. Kind of a bummer as I was looking at either some new Conti DWS or the GY WR 2 as possible for next on my Accord probably in spring.

Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing your concerns. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment or confusion regarding the road hazard protection policy for tires purchased in New York.

We completely understand how important this benefit is when making a purchase, and we truly value your preference for Sam’s Club tire options. Unfortunately, due to state-specific regulations, road hazard protection is no longer available for tires purchased in New York. However, if tires were purchased in Pennsylvania, they would still be eligible for road hazard protection, and we would be happy to honor this coverage for you in New York.

Below in italic is the information I found on search. There was also some links to NYS.GOV with comments of insurance regulations and aftermarket from what I read. If the place included it at no extra charge, what is the issue? I would need to check my past purchases from Sam's club and others but I don't recall having a separate charge for road hazard. My daughters boyfriend just had 4x CC2 installed on Friday night at Costco and included 5 year road hazard with the other flat/rotation/balance services. Do any other states have this or is just a matter of time? I have no clue how many people do get road hazard replacements.

In all my years of driving I only recall 1 road hazard replacement. That was caused by a crater of pothole the NYS DOT denied having any knowledge of even though they had DOT crews patching the Long Island Expressway 24/7. Between the lanes it was crumbling and safety hazard to change lanes. It was a rainy night and I missed seeing it. There was at least 5 cars just past it changing flats. Mine just bubbled and bent rim. No NYS DOT did not cover the rim damage and alignment check even with pictures of the whole area.

Effective March 1, 2025, New York State law prevents retailers from selling third-party road hazard coverage on tires. This was previously permitted under certain conditions but will now be limited to manufacturer warranties. The change has prompted some retailers, like Walmart and Sam's Club, to end their road hazard protection programs for New York residents.
Key takeaways for New York retailers and consumers

  • Retailer programs are ending: Beginning March 1, 2025, stores like Sam's Club will no longer offer their road hazard protection programs in New York. A similar change took effect for Walmart+ members on February 28, 2025.
  • Manufacturer warranties remain: The new law does not prevent tire manufacturers from offering a warranty that includes road hazard damage. This coverage is generally considered part of the product's purchase price and is distinct from a separate, add-on service contract.
  • Past purchases are honored: For programs canceled by retailers, any road hazard coverage purchased before the cut-off date (e.g., February 28, 2025, for Walmart+) will still be honored, provided the customer remains eligible.
  • Regulation of service contracts: The change stems from New York's strict interpretation of insurance law. The Department of Financial Services (DFS) has long viewed third-party road hazard programs as an unlicensed insurance business, though they were previously allowed as service contracts under specific conditions.
  • Focus on transparency: In a related development, a proposed New York State Senate bill (S510) would require retailers to include the date of manufacture on the sales receipt for all motor vehicle tires. This is intended to increase consumer transparency and prevent old tires from being sold as new.

I have a 21 RAV4. Personally I like the design of the Michelin Cross Climate 2 but it’s our most returned tire at the Toyota dealership where I work for noise complaints. I’d say for every 10 sets sold at least 3 come back for credit towards new tires because they don’t like the Cross Climate 2. I had to do a swap last week on a used car the customer wouldn’t take it because they said it was too noisy with the Cross Climate 2 so we swapped them out with other tires to make the sale. When I get tires for mine I’ll most likely get Uniroyal Tiger Paw I know you said no all season but they are amazing tires. I’ll most likely get those or BFGoodrich or something like that.
The noise difference is more pronounced when you first get them and as they wear off in first 500-1000 miles they quiet down. Also a 1-2 mpg loss initially that seems to under 1 mpg after vs our previous General RT45. We have 4k on our Tiguans recent CC2 tires.

I believe 3 peak tires/all weather have a slightly higher rolling resistance. Part of the compromise.

Last month the LX25 had a $200 rebate.
The $200 rebate was if you used the Continental Tire Credit card. It was only $110 if not.

I actually opened a Conti CC in November '23 just for the extra rebate. I bought my son's TruContact Tour's with it. Paid it off at end of month anyway. This past month I used it at the Honda dealer for new VikingContact 8 for wife's Pilot. Just got the $200 rebate card on Saturday.

Just something to consider for future.

Nokian designs their tires, from all-season, winter tires, to all-weather to have low rolling resistance, as it's part of their design philosophy.

The Nokian Hakka 9 unstudded, as given me better fuel economy than the CC2.

Yes MPG was great in what i owned over last 20 years. However more than not the last 15k they sounded like tractor tires.

Have you used any nokians from the TN plant? How well do they balance?
