2023 Ford F350 U-Haul

Had to rent a U-Haul to get the 19 year old up to college. It’s a 2023 F350 15’ and wow does the 7.3 V8 sound horrible. It’s rough, loud, has a metallic sound to it and it only has 8,100 miles and 220 hours on the engine. Seems to have normal power. Tires look new and I checked the oil and it looks fresh and it is right where it should be on the dip stick. Already has some rust in the engine compartment.

Do all Ford 7.3 sound this way or has this one already been abused in its short 8,100 mile life? I’m guessing too that moving trucks probably get stripped of all sound-insulation to save money?

How do you know the hours on it? Is there a hobbs meter somewhere?

It has a dog house and no sound deadening. All U-hauls are loud. Your Tundra has carpet, sound deadening and you don't ride/drive sitting next to the engine. To me it is odd to compare the two. One is purpose built just to work. The other has to meet a bunch of wickets to include daily driving.
Also, the cutaway/Class C chassis are open in the back, the front wall of the box is right behind your seat/head. Any exhaust or noise from the back comes right in, no sound deadening at all. Our Express 15 foot box truck is like that, much noisier than the Express vans.

I had a few E350/E450 cutaways with both V8 and V10. Driving it the engine is about 8 inches from your right ankle with a plastic cover and a couple of inches of insulation. With 410 gears she's running pretty high rpms. There loud no way around it but durable front ends eat tires always used Michelin ltx they lasted the longest

Ok…it was just loud and so I asked and I received good responses. I apologize that this question didn’t meet your minimum standard for being a good question.

If you have it in a 529 plan it can roll over into his first IRA and or home purchase! Consult a proper tax professional.

As to the U-haul, maybe they made it loud on purpose so people would stay off the go pedal, and treat the equipment better. It's like how they put uncomfortable seats in humvees so the troops wouldn't be doing cool jumps in them.

My RV had a similar emissions statement but it only had a 22 gallon fuel cell. With a 460 getting 6.7 MPG, that means filling up every 150 miles.
It was so loud, both my son and I were hoarse from the 1.5 hour trip…but it got us there.

Lol. The question was fine. Just not a fair comparison. It be like me comparing my 3/4 ton to a 1/2. Not a fair comparison.

I've never liked the sound of any Ford engine. Except maybe the 5.0L.

The modular engines when starting sound like an engine cranking with no compression. Like a vacuum cleaner? There's no rumble, just vacuum cleaner sounds while driving too.

E350 not F350, big difference. These are old school… if it was an F350 you’d hear a lot less motor noise :)
The E-350 still has the twin I-beam front suspension that originally came out in 1965 in the F-series! I believe the AC system is still vacuum operated, amongst some other ancient things on the E-series, but hey, they are inexpensive workhorses that can last a long time.

Sound on video doesn’t do it justice. Easily 2x louder than my 5.7 in the Tundra.

Sounds like 'Murica to me. Ready for work. I'm not hearing a problem here, I don't hear any mechanical knocking noises or anything like that.

In fact I like the way it sounds with real V8 noises, I'd probably have my foot flat to the floor getting on the highway with a ish-eating grin on my face. I mean I have one EV and looking for another, but, some things ICE can definitely be appreciated. Wouldn't mind having a weekend ICE car to burn rubber and make noises like this. But anyway.

There was a harsh metallic sound that the video didn’t capture well. I understand what everyone is saying as far as cabin differences but standing outside in front of this truck the engine was obnoxiously loud compared to standing in front of the Tundra and it definitely sounded much less refined.

Understanding it’s not geared for acceleration, it was a real dog in terms of performance. Only had a large couch and some miscellaneous stuff in back and while the engine made noise, it did not result in much acceleration. Accelerating from 55 to 70 was painful. Interestingly, trans temp was 220F cruising on the highway at 70mph. I figured the transmission cooling would’ve been more robust considering there was only a couple hundred pound in back. I got about 10mpg doing mostly highway.

Sounds like it drives like a box truck.

I rented one last year that had the Triton v10. It got the beans a few times just to hear how awesome it sounded.
