Hello folks,

I just saw that Walmart has 0w-16 oil. Are there any concerns I should know about using it in my 2023 Camry Hybrid for the winter? I've been using Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy because I had a good stock of it.

I drive about 12K miles a year and change the oil twice a year. It’s usually a mix of highway and city driving. I commute to NYC for work, which is 23 miles one way.

I've used Supertech 5w-30 oil in the past without any problems, but I just want to double-check.

Thanks in advance.

You’ll be just fine!
I am using Walmart SuperTech and CarQuest/FRAM 0W16 from Advance Auto oil change bundle, in our 2023 Toyota Venza Hybrid in between the 2 free Toyota OCI maintenance. I just finished our last free oil & filter change from the dealer in late July 2025 and will change before winter once again with one of those brands.

There is no way that I am doing 10K mile OCIs. I may do a 6k or 7k mile OCI on very few occasions(driving/traveling dependent) but only as the exception, not the rule.

We travel about the same miles/year as you and I change 2X/yr. as well. I did our first two OCI’s early @2500 & 5000 miles and let the dealer do the 10K mile OCI. I am staying with the 5000 mile OCI while the dealer did the last 10K mile OCI. And too, I may use on occasion 0W20(summer) if I can’t get 0W16 because the owners manual says that I can.

That sounds like a good plan. You're not going any longer than say 6k per oil change. The ST may not be the most lavish oil but it's solid oil.

it's fine but i'd rather use Mobil 1 ESP 0w-20 if I wanted something thin and good.

This!!

I would be more confident in the Mobil 1 ESP 0w-20 in your 2.5L hybrid engine than the Super Tech.

And there’s nothing in the owner’s manual that prohibits the use of 0w-20.

Your friends and neighbors in the NYC area may give you the stinkeye for using a WalMart brand but from a technical standpoint you'll be just fine.

I noticed zero difference in MPGs between 0W16 and 0W20 in my 2023 Rav4 Hybrid. Much better quality synthetics in 0W20 flavor for acouple dollars more. Super Tech for 4K would be my max...

Mobil 1 0W-16 for approx. 6,000 miles / 6 month OCI will be just fine for an average commuting situation. Supertech 0W-16 will be fine too. ST will save $10-20 annually over Mobil 1, if that’s worth it to you. It is not even a half a tank of gas cost difference annually for some perspective.

No, it's not a lot of money the way you describe it. However, it is the cost of oil filters to go along with the oil...and maybe a candy bar or two at checkout! ;)

The choice for SuperTech oil wasn’t about the price at all. I usually stock up. I had Mobil 1 and Penn Platinum stocked up and haven’t had time to keep an eye on the deals. So now I have run out of oil.

I just saw 0W-16 on the Walmart website, so I thought I would give it a shot. I am really hoping Costco starts carrying 0W-16 soon.

@THORROMIG I haven't noticed difference either, but in the one of the videos, car care nut guy, who is a Toyota specialist explains why one needs to stick to 0W-16. I admit, my understanding is not remotely as close to as 10% of his, so instead of splitting my hair, I am just sticking to his advice.

SuperTech is spoken well on this forum. Lots of users and I too have used it in relatives cars. A very good oil.

And I recommend 0W-20

I’ve been running 0w20 (Valvoline Restore and Protect)for the past two intervals in my 2023 Corolla across hybrid no difference that I can perceive or measure in performance, so go ahead and get the Kirkland if that works for you

Car Care Nut is unfortunately wrong on this. There is no need for it. But you’re perfectly fine using it if that is preferred. Been debated around here many times and has been ultimately debunked.

I think you'll be fine using SuperTech 0W16 and changing in twice a year/6,000 miles. I don't know if I'd go 1 year or 10,000 miles.
