2022 Silverado ZR2

TFL put this chart together.

This truck really competes with the TRD-Pro/F-150 Tremor more so than the TRX/Raptor.

I know a lot of GM people are disappointed that's it is not a Raptor competitor, but I think many will still like it. There is rumor they will eventually throw the larger more powerful engine in it eventually.

I personally like it a lot and think it's well placed where it is. The Raptor and TRX are great for what they are, but I never had interest in either of them.

How so? ZR2 has front and rear lockers, much better shocks, and essentialy the same approach angles. In what way is it more capable?
Spinning 35" tires on asphalt with a 6.2
Just turn off the nannies and hit the gas. 6.2 is a beast. You don't need 700 torque to spin tires. People are spoiled these days!
Who knows? If i were to buy one today, there is one in Sandy Utah dealer ask $131,385 new on $91,385 sticker. Another new $129,995 on a $89,995 sticker. A used one $109,995 2399 miles. A few more used ones in the low 100k. Cheapest one i could drive to today and buy $94,500 with 6,668 miles. There are a lot of ads at MSRP but they are sold/preordered units left online to advertise.

Very expensive trucks!

Lockers / tires / clearance are king for off road (which you already know) I'm disappointed the 2022 Tundra TRD Pro is essentially an appearance package once again with no added height and no front locker and plain jane tires. The shocks are improved but nothing to write home about. Which is why I am here bumping this thread =)

Great chart! Thanks! I agree about competing with the Tremor, but the TRD Pro is essentially nothing more than a TrailBoss/FX4 package. It's all looks, a skid plate and some shocks. It's unimpressive and lacking considering the current truck climate. Toyota really dropped the ball when they could have stole and score a three pointer.

There is literally no precedent for a front locker on any half ton except the ZR2, which doesnt exist yet. At best, we had the torsen lsd in the Raptor and now Tremor. I just dont see where a locker in the front is particularly useful for a half ton truck. Especially with Toyota having A-Trac and Crawl available and a locker in the rear. I bet it’s every bit as good.

The trd is on Falken wildpeaks which are the factory Gladiator Rubicon tires and are extremely well regarded. They dont look aggressive like a Duratrac or similar, but are just as good by all accounts.

IMO - not every bit as good … just good enough most of the time. I know this from years of experience when we’d install harsh aftermarket kit … or only 1 guy did. And now owning F/R electronic lockers - they are are king of the hill.
Should it change a decision on a vehicle ? Maybe not - depends on where you go with it …

Duratrac is better in mud … nothing else … used here allot by farmers/ranchers and oilfield crowd …
Personally I’m still liking the BFG KO2 since they put some “chew” on the shoulder 😷
 
In my area a FL is something I'd rarely use, but it's nice to have.

My argument is, where are you bringing a stock half ton truck where the locker will make the difference vs A-Trac or something similar. Mike Sweers said exactly that on his interview with Andre at TFL truck. You're not running the Rubicon in anything remotely resembling a stock Tundra.

I get A-trac is not as good as a locker in certain situations, but being in the Lexus offroad groups, I have seen A-trac do some silly things in GX's with open diffs front and rear. You can get through most situations with just a-trac, nevermind a rear locker + A-trac.

People have been off roading 1/2 tons for as long as there have been 1/2 tons. The Raptor/TRX are more for bombing over land at a high rate of speed as opposed to rock crawling anyway… which is more interesting IMO.

and they’ve always been the victim of bullying because they suck at it.

the raptor reinvented it with images of baja 1000. today’s powerful trucks are saddled with the baggage of 35s and a lift so they can tackle the toughest forest service roads lol

“Off roading” is now synonymous with rock crawling just like computers and phones took “technology“ … as I just mentioned - years ago we used tire chains in mud - but that’s not off roading ? My (lifted) Dodge PowerWagon had 38” super swampers back when you had to order them from LA. But that was not off roading.

I will travel 18 miles in deep sand this afternoon loaded with camping gear. Only 5 miles of that gets “worked” by a FE loader. Gets worse as you go - later half I will see Jeeps or modified PU’s - maybe the odd ZR2. Unfortunately the heavy duty series diesel trucks don’t fare as well … overall weight and distribution over the tires is not the best.
