2021 Wrangler Sahara 4xe- One year in...

October 9 2024 marks one year of ownership of my 2021 Sahara 4xe; I use it primarily to drive back and forth to work (a 24 mile round trip) so I've only put 7,500 miles on it. Until the latest recall (see below) I plugged it in every night. With a range on electric of @24 miles it gets great mileage. On its worst fill up it managed 30 mpg while the high water mark has been 117 mpg. There was a recall for the defroster software and my dealer handled it in under 90 minutes- along with an oil change and tire rotation- all of which was free.

My dealer also sells AEV Jeeps and trucks, so they end up with a fair number of take-off wheels- and they give them away for free on the condition you pick them up and agree not to resell them. As a result I have a set of 2024 Rubicon wheels (along with TPMS) awaiting a set of BFG All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires, which should eradicate the Sahara's "mall crawler" vibe. Aside from that, the only accessories I've added are Quadratec entry guards , OEM Jeep rubber mats, and a black 21"AMR antenna (to clear a crossbeam in the garage).

The only "issue" I've had involves the latest recall, which deals with the HV battery; apparently around 5% of 4xe Jeeps are affected and out of that 5% a much smaller percentage could fail. Out of an abundance of caution Jeep advises parking the Wrangler outside. I don't want to do that since a varmint chewed up $900 worth of wiring harness on my TJ when it was parked outside. If the battery is not charged the risk of fire goes down as well, so I'm comfortable with my decision. Of course hysteria about the recall is rampant on the 4xe FB pages and forums. One person posted, "I have 4 young grandsons and they will NOT be in my Jeep until the recall is done!"
I replied, "I make anyone who rides in the rear seat wear a Nomex suit with a respirator.. I park my 4xe in my downstairs garage, but I sleep beside it on the floor with a large fire extinguisher clutched in my trembling hands. Better safe than sorry!"

Nice to see that you are using the hybrid version for its designed purpose.
The Volt was similar, except you could have made your entire commute using battery power only. Complete recharge overnight w/full 48 mile range.
Early Volts had similar warnings about fire, but I think it was directed at the charger and not the vehicle battery.
My Sahara (not hybrid) was great, as long as you didn't want to drive over 50 mph. Noise, handling, and economy suffered after that.
 
Free Rubi take off wheels is beyond awesome! (y) Was hoping you'd report on your experience at some point.

The 4XE is on my radar, wife wants an EV someday, I'll compromise on a hybrid....Jeep. Just needs a bit more electric range.

My 02 Sahara has a 4" lift and 33" tires and drives dead steady at 75. If a Wrangler drives squirrelly something is worn out.

My '98 Sahara 4.0L/5MT only has a 1" lift and 31" tires but I've done 80+ in it and it was surprisingly smooth. I typically run it at 75 on the highway though. Here if you do under 75 on the highway you are getting run off the road.
 
I’m not a fan of it on the Grand Cherokee 4xe I got, but I also don’t have a good way to charge it. Takes too long on 120, but it’s getting 22mpg out of a 5400lb AWD tank. I generally put it into e-save mode with it set to “maintain charge.”

I do like the almost instant heat however, and overall I like the rest of it but you cannot rev it in park so I will never buy one. My kids were very very disappointed.

What size KO3? When I was looking at those in 315 - they only had F rated which I’d only put on a 2500 truck myself …
*285 it’s still an E and I wanted C - so KO2.
*stock on my Rubicon wheels was 285 C.

I really liked the 4xe Wrangler Sahara we rented in Sedona a few weeks ago. It was awesome doing trails in all electric mode most of the time. The throttle was easier to modulate in electric mode when in 4 LO on really bumpy stuff.

My only complaints are how the engine sounds at lower revs and the way my knee rubbed in the transfer case shifter when in 2WD. The shift lever issue was remedied with a “Grand Canyon” foam coozie that I stuck on there but it was very annoying.

I was also impressed with the highway passing performance in hybrid mode. Hitting 90+ in a Wrangler rather quickly is not something I’ve experienced before.
 
I have a rental JGC 4xe right now, I need to do some more research into this powertrain, it really is interesting and seems to work well. Weird to have it in electric mode and feel shifts while accelerating, and the e-save mode really charges up the battery quickly. I haven't had an opportunity to plug it in yet so that's the only way I have of recharging it.

I just leave it in 4H Auto.

That’s how we did it with our rental. Left it in e-save mode around town and got it to 94% battery, then hit the trails.
 
Even when bone stock my '19 JLUR was a handful with the least bit of wind. The aerodynamics are horrible, even without a lift and despite the JL bringing the windshield back a few degrees.

They're a ton of fun but I wouldn't want one as my primary family truckster, even stock. They're fine on a calm day....and that's about it.

A JT may do better due to the insanely long wb.

And LiteBrite (I know, I know) reported that hydro assist pretty much eliminated wandering from crosswinds, which makes sense actually, if everything mechanically is tight.

Seriously, there's a reason the box shape isn't used on more vehicles, and no, it's not just fuel economy
 
I agree with AZJeff, if you're wobblin' @ 75, something's wrong.

Freeway speeds in MI, smooth as silk
Get your front suspension items checked asap
Then double steering dampers would assist, too.
 
I love my JLU Sahara. No issues driving it on cross country road trips to wheel! I don't think any other vehicle sold new today offers the same off road performance that is still nice to drive on road. Yeah, Defenders, Discos, RRs, maybe a 4runner or Land Cruiser can wheel, but don't hold a candle to the solid front axle of a Wrangler off road.

This is my 2020 after bumping up to 315’s on the stock suspension - no wobble and the big sidewalls ride even better on the road - great traction in the soft sand …

Update: The recall process for the HV battery was simple. I dropped it off at my dealer before noon and picked it up the next day in the afternoon. The recall basically involves a download of new diagnostic software to more thoroughly monitor the condition of the HV battery.
I’ve also installed a Quadratec dead pedal. When the weather clears I will install the Rubicon wheels with appropriate rubber.
 
I have a 2020 Sport Willys and really enjoy it, but it isn't a daily driver. I have a co-worker with a 4xE that cannot wait to get rid of it. His is one of the ones that has had nothing but trouble. Oddly enough, he is an electrician.

I'd have considered one if I could have afforded it at the time.
