My mother's 2021 Chevy Equinox will not start. You press the start button, it turns over but will not start. Then a low fuel light illuminates on her speedometer screen. However when the gauges do their sweep and return to their normal position the fuel gauge say she has over a 1/4 of a tank.

Any idea what's going on?

P.S. no engine codes.

???There may be a crack in the in-tank fuel pumps plastic where it draws in fuel, causing it to draw in air instead of fuel, when fuel volume gets low and losing its prime. This is just my uneducated guess! Try priming the fuel pump by turning on & off the ignition several times before actually starting the engine and see if this will get the engine started.

Might be the fuel pump module. They're known to fail even after already being replaced once, Check the recalls on it. I had to do it on my 21 escalade and i think there's another one out for it too.

Update:

I got it started. It cuts out during stops. Then it displays two warning messages. Low fuel and AWD malfunction. It takes 1-3 dozen attempts to start it again.

Im in over my head here.

My escalade did the same thing. it would crank for a while then start up for a second and cut out. New fuel pump module fixed that. Check engine light turned on as well, no awd message since mines rwd.

Another 2021 Equinox owner here. I believe there is some type of recall for certain 2021-22 models for fuel pump module failure, but having followed some GM/Equinox boards for a few years now, I don't know that I've ever read of one failing on a 2018-2024 Equinox. If it's AWD, you have a saddle style tank with two fuel pumps. Can you hear any buzzing back there with the ignition on, engine off?

Never knew these new cars especially non luxury ones got saddle tanks.

I guess you can thank the added complexity of AWD for this. The driveshaft runs up through the "hump" in the gas tank, thus the two separate-ish chambers. FWD models have a totally different fuel tank.
