A friend got a 2018 Elantra Sport 2.0. I will probably be doing the first oil change on this car. Dealer told her first oil change is due at 3750 miles. After that she had the OLM set at 7000 miles to keep the warranty up. She will cover 7000 miles in about 9 months. Does anyone know if there is a crush washer that needs replacing at the oil service? I've had little experience with Hyundai's before. Also, owner manual says 5w20, 5w30 and 10w30. I will certainly use synthetic but any advice on oil weight? Lastly, any opinions on oil filter choice? Is OEM the best choice for warranty? My personal opinion is to go to Walmart or the like and pick a off the shelf oil filter for the car and 5 quart jug of oil. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

1. There is a crush washer.
2. 5W20 and 5W30 are the recommended oil weights. 5W20 is the oil weight on the fill cap.
3. Use OEM or Mann W811/80 oil filter. This is a very good quality filter price at <$6.

My sister has beaten the snot out of a few Elantra's with her current one being the same model type as your friend currently has. She runs hers on the cheapest bulk conventional oil out there and it seems to get by just fine with her abusive ways so I wouldn't worry about it. If it can survive her until 300K KM's 180K miles then it will do well for anyone.

Use a quality 5w30 in this engine and it will see a long life. They like 30wt's these engines even though they are spec'ed for 20wt.
I would use OEM filter or an Amsoil/RP filter with Hyundai as I had bad experiences with other brands when I owned my Santa Fe.

There is an aluminum crush washer and if you don't over-tighten it you can use it again. (20ft-lbs) is sufficient.

I've ran 0W-20, 5W-20 and 5w30 in my 2017 Elantra 2.0L (29k miles). I don't have any complaints with any of them, but I mostly use 5w30. Considering my climate, I don't see the need to go out of my way to get XW-20. I have used OEM and Fram Ultra filters on mine as well, but have used a majority of OEM due to Hyundai's pickiness with running the OEM filter. It's well built and can be had for pretty cheap (bought 12 for $45 off ebay).

Regardless, these are good engines and have shown pretty good results in UOAs. Oil changes are also pretty easy which is nice.

No problems running 5-20 MaxLife for 6000 miles on my GDI 2.0 liter although I through in a half quart of Harvest King 5-30 syn (since I expect the oil change guy thought I had a 1.6 base Soul engine) left it at half way on the hatfchmarks. Doesn't burn a drop of oil. Use standard oil change place's Valvoline oil filter as I did with a 1.6 Rio although I'm sure it's smaller and poorer quality than HyunKia units. Never had any start up rattle using those filters so went with it.

Place I used does VWB oil changes for $10 (plus shop fees) so may drop interval to five thousand miles and use that once I get to a switch over divide by 5K mark. May move it up to 5-30 although absolute no burning with my 5-20. This is a Hertz rental so it probably wasn't treated gently for first 38K. Now at 49K in a bit over six months. If HyunKia's don't catastrophically blow up from shavings left during the manufacturing process (mostly older 2.4's), I think they're durable, not very fussy engines.

If I wasn' t in my mid seventies and living in a place that doesn't allow working on your car I'd probably be buying a cheap synthetic, but they're all at least semi-syn, right?

My understanding is the Sport has the 1.6 Turbo.

2018 Elantra Sport

If it were mine Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Plantinum 5w30. After rebate of course. I use OEM or Fram Ultra on my 2017 Elantra that does have the 2.0. Will be using Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 soon. Using 10w-30 Chevron Supreme because I had it with a Fram Ultra. Extra quiet this run.

If it is the 2.0 Atkinson I prefer a 30 weight. Quieter. Fuel economy about the same. Per Hyundai Owner's Manual "higher viscosity oils are required for satisfactory lubrication in hot weather". However, the engine may live a happy life with 5w-20. Does not seem picky.

On mine warranty says 3,750 or 6 months for severe service so that is what I do.

The crush washer is solid so its reusable until it isnt.(I usually get 4-5 changes on mine)

vs

The subaru style that actually crush and are 1 use only.

I dont think the oil really matters much..

my choice: any name brand syn 5w20 or 5w30.

It should have a transmission drain plug.
Might want to consider a drain and fill yearly after the first couple years to keep it fresh.
(less than half the fluid comes out IIRC)

Yes now that I think about it. It might be the value edition. For sure has the 2.0 and not the turbo.

Super easy to change oil. I can just reach under with car parked, open the EZ Oil Drain Valve I installed, take a nap, remove filter which is toward front, etc. Easy 15 minutes.

I am concerned about keeping good records, receipts, etc just in case warranty work is needed.
