The owners manual says to do a "fluid change" every 80,000 miles for the 6 speed automatic (non-DSG) transmission. I was thinking about having the dealership do it while it's in for the 40k service. Has anyone done this service before? How dark was the fluid after 40,000 miles?

It is very stout transmission. Do every 60-70k.

My take is to replace it now. And no, I don't own a vehicle with this transmission.

I do ATF at 30k and the filter at 60k.

Also FWIW, the fluid is (or is very similar to) T-WS. It turns dark pretty quick but that doesn't mean it is bad.
My RS3 is still on the 40k schedule (actually 60k km in Canada) First time is just the fluid, filter the second time. I did both at 45k km (28k miles) and I feel it was basically a waste. Filter and fluid still looked brand new. I won’t do it again until 100k km probably and I don’t think I’ll even do the filter at that point.

I'd do the 1st change now when you have the car serviced, subsequent ones can be done at 70-80K intervals.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Since this would be the first fluid change it would contain anything from the initial break in. After that I'd follow at 80k intervals.
Yeah it doesn't look awful but unfortunately I'm in an apartment complex and don't have access to a lot of those things. My garage is so small that it's barely big enough for my little hatchback. I would do it myself if I could though.

I did my first at 55,000 miles or so and five years at the time. It's a GM car so it's claimed to be "lifetime" [ marketing BS IMHO ]. I will do it again at 100,000 miles whenever that happens. I am only at 78,000 today.
Personally, BurntMusic, I don't think any harm will be done if you do it now and then at 80 or 100,000.
The two new cars I have purchased and a rebuilt engine I had put in got extremely early first oil changes as well as other new fluids.
It sounds like foolish extra expense, but I don't buy them to sell or trade them every few years. Objective is long term ownership and useful life.
