In January my wife purchased her 5th Explorer, MY 1993, 1996, 2002, 2005, 2017. The only dog was the 2002 with the 4.0 SOHC, the timing chain tensioners started failing at 37,000 miles and were real bad by 45,000 miles, a common problem for the early 4.0 SOHC Colonge engines. Her 2017 Explorer has the twin turbo DI 2.3 four with the 6 speed auto tranny. I've always been a skeptic of small engines in heavier vehicles. But this combo of the Ecoboost with the 6 speed auto is a winner. I had the chance to drive it for hours recently and I can honestly say this is a real good power/weight combination. It accelerates quickly and cruses quietly at 80 mph and still returns 22+ mpg, much better than V6 SOHC or the 4.6 SOHC V-8 in her 2005. The horsepower and torque of the 2.3 Ecoboost is much greater than either the SOCH V-6 0r V-8. Maybe modern technology is on to something

The Ecoboost 4 cylinders are real good engines. My mom has the 2.0L EB in her Fusion and enjoys it immensely. This was her first car that didn't have a V8 and she was really skeptical about it, but now can't tell the difference.

O the 2.3L is a single turbo, not a dual turbo. That would be an awesome engine with 2 turbos.

Thanks, I thought it was a twin turbo, my bad, There is no turbo lag so I "assumed" it was twin turbos. Ford really did a great job with their small engine turbo engines.

What is kinda cool is there is no exhaust manifold. The turbo bolts directly to the head.

Twin-scroll turbo, so it spool real fast and give instant throttle response. Two turbos on 4 cylinder wouldnt be very efficient compared to v6 or v8. Heard the ecoboost motors dont get quite the fuel economy the epa claim.

Hoonage?

I have a F150 with the 2.7 eco and it gets pretty close to the EPA mpg on the freeway driving conservatively.

In the real world I would venture to say that few vehicles achieve the EPA gas mileage ratings. They are done under controlled test conditions. In actuality there are too many variables that affect the gas mileage on the road. Besides the EPA even calls them estimates. For this Explorer the EPA rating is 18 city, 25 highway and 21 combined, we've been averaging 22 mpg overall on regular gas. The Explorer has less than 5,000 miles on it, so it's not broken in yet. Ford seems to have a winner with in the this class SUV engine.

Will file that in the memory banks when it comes time to replace the current '07 Explorer. Sounds like a nice engine.

Been super satisfied with the 2.7 in my F150. Even five years ago if you had told me I'd prefer a small V6 turbo in my F150 (1/2 the displacement of my last V8), I'd have told you that you were crazy. Now, I get plenty of power and much better fuel mileage.
