2017 Corolla LE Rental

This sounds like a really decent car that can be bought for surprisingly little money at typical prices for those who shop and know what these cars really retail at.
Not everyone gets their ya yas from their cars and for those who don't, something like this Corolla would be a very good choice.
Thanks for your take on this often dissed model.

This is pretty much where me and my wife are now. All we want is a reliable vehicle to get from point A to point B. Not worried about luxury. I'd happily drive a Corolla if that is what our budget dictated. We are currently looking at a Camry as I type this. We've decided, at our age and both being retired, that we don't need two vehicles anymore. Nor do we need a truck like we used to.

Boring is good. I like my cars the way I like my refrigerators. Others may prefer those fancy windows and touch screen, but I like mine boring and drama free for 20 years.

The last thing I want is my father in law to have a quirky car that is fun, but ask me for help on a regular basis.

Wife has a 17 accord V6. Sort of boring until you step on it, things happen quickly. I prefer a V8 and rear wheel drive, but That Honda is really a nice car.

I like the Corolla but I find the windshield really small and the forward visibility poor.

Is that just how they make new cars these days or is the Corolla just particularly bad?

That I avoid as a rental … noisy and cramped …

A 1 year old car breaking down twice and being in the shop 3 times is a one in a million chance. I've never heard of anyone having that kind of luck with any vehicle.

You have led a very sheltered life indeed.

It happens quite often. I bought a brand new 95 Trans Am back in January 1996 and as soon as I pulled off the lot I noticed a problem with the windshield wipers. A week later the starter failed. In the first year and a half, it was in the shop about 30 times.

I've also recently rented a Corolla LE. Thought it was terrible. The doors sound insanely cheap, the CVT is harsh, road noise is bad, steering numb. Fuel economy was excellent and I suppose the radio and A/C controls were intuitive. Really just an awful, boring car. I will echo the sentiment that the Cruze is an infinitely better vehicle, especially the 2nd gen. I know this post will not be popular here among the supposed auto enthusiasts on this site - nobody likes when you offer an opinion that you like to have fun driving rather than just drive the most bland reliable-mobile you can find. If the best thing you can say about a Corolla is that it's reliable, it's not a good car. Anyone who refuses to buy anything other than Japanese would be much better suited to get a Civic.

I know turbochargers get pooped on here all the time, but in small cars they make a world of difference. Cruze and Civic and other turbos make full torque at very low RPM.

I will say I would like to try the Corolla LE Eco just for the novelty of driving that engine that doesn't have a throttle body.

The way I look at it is, has the Corolla ever been a 'driver's car'? It is what is always has been. Boring, predictable, economical and reliable.
