Well the bu' was in the shop from Getting hit by a deer. And insurance was fixing it so they sent me enterprise for a rental. At first they gave me a 16 Hyundai accent. Tht was a pile of [censored]. Went back a few hrs later and they gave me a 2017 chevy sonic 1LT.

Car only had 45 miles when i got it. New car smell and everything. Came with the NA 1.8L ecotec with the 6 speed trans. Car has some get up and go from a stop, but if u are trying to pass on the highway ur dropping down at least 2 gears and pushing 5k plus rpm's. No real storage and only the drivers side chair has an arm rest. No rear leg room at all. Transmission gears are way 2 small. Ur in 6th gear by 35mph and in second gear by 7mph. Doing 80 on the highway with the radio up u can her the engine screaming at 3k rpm's. Anything over 60mph u can hear the engine in the cabin. I did get the car up 2 105mph at WOT at 6.5k rpm's and tht was scary.

Boohoo it was an empty wide open road. And its not my car. There is a reason y u dont by a rental.

An empty wide open road is no excuse to brake the law. Also, you should have more respect for other people's property. One of the many things wrong with society these days.

Just the name "Sonic" makes it sound fast...really though in a previous life it was the "Aveo" and that's depressing in of itself.

Engines are made of cheese and twigs are they?

I believe the Spark is the current version of the Aveo, not the Sonic.

I think the Sonic hatchback with the turbo and a manual would be fun. And I normally prefer automatics. Same drivetrains as the Cruze. I've seen some attractive pricing on these. I won't mention the numbers because of the naysayers.

What a pathetic attitude toward someone else's property.

Well said Pop!

I find the texting lingo more disturbing than the treatment of the rental econobox.

There is a reason most people dont use UR and U.

Smart phones have been around just about as long as dumb phones. "Text lingo" is now passé.

At 105 I doubt the engine was in top gear--probably can't push top gear with that much wind drag.

The 1.8 is inferior to the available 1.4T - worse fuel economy, less HP and torque output, timing belt vs. timing chain, etc. The 1.8 might feel stronger up to 2,000 RPM when the 1.4's turbo and VVT get with the plan, but after that the 1.4T has very good torque that peaks at 2,500 RPM. And the automatic trans. is very eager to get into the highest gear possible - kinda like if you obeyed the upshift light on a stick shift. :P

And if it's worth anything, my 1.4T/M6 2013 Cruze will hit the speed limiter before redline in 5th - IIRC it'll hit it in 6th, but it comes slightly quicker in 5th. Not sure which gear would be necessary for terminal velocity.

That's half the fun of renting a car, to see what it can do! I test acceleration, but hardly top speed. I know most cars can do 100+ and I already know what that feels like (done it on a few of my own vehicles)-- so it's pointless to put my cheap auto insurance on the line, to do something illegal in something that probably isn't all that exhilarating (a 1.8L Chevy Sonic comes to mind...)

I don't call 3k RPM highway cruisng in a small econobox "screaming" by any sense of the imagination. 3k @ 80mph is decent gearing, probably delivering the best gas mileage for the engine at that speed. My first car was an '86 Toyota Tercel Wagon 4x4 w/ a 6 speed manual (first gear was a granny gear, only avail in 4wd). It did 3500rpm @ 70, and its little 1.5L survived some 240k miles. My F250 (1985) turns nearly 3500rpm @ 80mph with its 1:1 top gear and 4.11 rear end. That's screaming.

the 2.5L DI 4 cyl in my malibu is plenty of power for me (196hp). I test drove both engines in a Cruze and still not enough power. Now a few months ago i had a loaner new generation chevy cruze with the new DI 1.4T ecotec. The new DI 1.4T is really nice.

That describes most every 4 cylinder ever installed in a cheap economy car, in my opinion.
