Got me a 2015 silverado crew cab LT with the 5.3 ecotec3 engine. Loving the new truck. Ive only got about 1k miles on it.

When would you all recomend i do the first oci? Was thinking around 4k miles. Going to use my 4 free oil changes from the dealer. After those are used up ive got a bunch of PU 5w20 for it sittin around lookin pretty!

Thanks for advice, !

I have heard that the factory fill is not really anything special anymore. I will gladly defer to other GM/Chevy owners on how long to run the fill from the factory.

After that I had heard that many GM owners go with their oil life monitor down to 15% or 10%. As a side note... Look up the A/C Delco Dexos motor oil on the PQIA. It's made by Exxon Mobil, its a synthetic blend and its a very very good oil. The NOACK volatility score of 7.9% is lower than many of the full synthetics. It would make me think that the base oils are very strong with this blend. The additive package is remarkably similar to the Mobil Super Synthetic I'm running now. The calcium, molybdenum, and boron are all just about the exact same. Walmart does carry this oil in some of their stores for $4 a qt. That's a whale of a deal for a oil that good

if it were me I'd ask what oil the dealership uses. If they had this AC Delco oil on hand I would request that for sure.

I have a '14 with the 5.3. When I was considering my first oil change, I ran into an issue with some GM dealers over the first free oil change. Some dealers will not do it until the oil change indicator shows a certain percentage. My dealer said 30%. I have a dealer closer to me than my purchasing dealer and they agreed to do it whenever I wanted. I decided to do the first @ 5K. However thanks to an overfill (dealers, ugh) on the first change I have since decided to do it myself. Too much hassle to get the "free" changes for me. Anyway you may or may not get blowback from your dealer if you ask for an oil change before the indicator says so.

Also, the free changes include semi-syn dexos rated GM oil. I am sure its good stuff, but I have synthetic ocd (not Fram related) and sleep better with full syn in the engine.

Coming from someone who works on these GM trucks at a dealership, we recommend 5k oci for the Dexos blend. Most people go by the olm, but the blend is a good oil.

Paid $400 for life time OCIs at my GM dealer for my 2005 Uplander. They wanted to see it at 6,000 mile intervals, OLM was usually between 15 and 25% depending on time of year. Managed to get 15 oil changes before moving on to another vehicle after the transmission started acting up after 8 years. Engine was fine.

Haven't run any tests or seen any problems yet, however, I have noticed the longer oci run the more you can smell a fuel odor when changing the oil. My dad has a 14 Sierra 5.3 doing 5k oci and can't smell any fuel. When people go 7-9k I can definitely smell fuel in the oil, if it is doing any damage I don't know.

I have a 2014 and I did the first oil change at 5k. Still had ~30 percent on the OLM. I then did it again at 10,15, and 20. Now I'm going by the OLM. That seemed to work well. The dealer didn't give me any hassle about doing it when I wanted.

I agree with the comments above that the AC oil is pretty good.

Dealers shouldn't hassle you. We've changed oil for people at 1k miles because they felt they needed to on a new car. Delco's oil isn't bad by any means. We have cars with over 100-150k using only GM's oil. Just maintain it like you should and you'll be fine.

Change the oil and filter NOW and IF the dealer performs a free LOF service, do an extra oil and filter change (with your surplus 5W-20) in-between while the engine is breaking in.

This amounts to 5,000 mile intervals for the first 25,000 miles.

I heard that GM changed their rules and now you can get the 4 free changes in two years anytime you wish no hassle. I would do every 6 months regardless miles as long as reasonable.

Haven't seen any fuel in my Sierra's UOA's.

They did. They actually changed the rules again to only 2 free oil changes for 2016 on vehicles (maybe 2015 too). Guess it was costing them too much.

These things take 8 quarts now. You would think the dealership is competent enough to do an oil change. They probably perform 100's a month. I understand some BITOG members are paranoid about allowing someone to simply remove an oil drain plug-drain out the oil, unscrew the filter, and then put a new one on. And then fill with oil.

Sounds simple enough for me.

The competency depends on the tech doing the job. There are a lot of fantastic techs that work at dealerships. The problem is odds are they aren't the techs doing the oil changes.

2015 still have 4 free oil changes. 2016 was the change to 2.

If you can ballpark the OLM at say 7k to 8k miles then change out at home at say 3k to 4k but don't reset the OLM. Take it in for 1st service when you get down to like 10%. Repeat if you feel it is needed. I would not think so though.
