Hey all,

I run Rotella T6 full synthetic & change the oil on my VW TDI (diesel) every 10,000 miles. It's my commuter and is driven almost solely for commuting & road trips. On my 1998 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am I run full synthetic Mobil 1 and change it every 5,000 miles as it sees a bit more skinny pedal.

I just picked up a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JKU) back in August. I'm at 4700 miles on the 3.6L V6 engine. Per my Mopar app it states oil change intervals of no more than 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. If severe duty use then not to exceed 4500 miles. My Jeep currently does not see anything near severe duty. Currently this Jeep sees 80% highway with little stop and go traffic. No current towing. Light on the skinny pedal for the most part, though once a tank I like to get on it while merging on the highway to keep the engine free of carbon.

I will be using Mopar brand OEM filters and most likely switching to Rotella full synthetic oil. What say you on the oil change intervals oh gurus of oil?

Thanks for any recommendations you all have.

Hello, Rick.

Isn't your Jeep under warranty? Why would you deviate from the OEM recommended viscosity at this time?

Just use the OLM and if your concerned about it do a used oil analysis. In my mothers 2011 Town and Country with a 3.6L I do 5,000 mile intervals with synthetic and it always looks super clean when it comes out so im probably going to extend that out another 1,000 and see how that does.

Don't use the Rotella, at least not while it's under warranty.

Use a 5W-20 that carries Chrysler MS-6395 approval. I've been running Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 in ours and changing it according to the OLM, which has been about 9000 miles.

I keep forgetting I have a warranty. This is my first new vehicle purchase.

Questions answered. Thanks all!

Will use the oil life monitor and recommended oil.

You can also use a 5W30 oil that meets the MS6395 spec. It says so in your owners manual.

Has anybody here ever heard of an engine warranty being rejected because of the wrong oil? Im curious because the dealer I worked at for a few years bought the cheapest oil they could find (unless you requested synthetic) and it was never the right weight oil and not certified as an SN. Ford and GM never kicked back any warranty claims either.

I know more than a few people who are pretty hard on their Pentastar equipped Jeeps and have no issue with 5w-20 ... even when it's 90 degrees and they're bouncing off the rev limiter in mud.

Call Mopar, see if they have any allowances to deviate from the reccomended grade.

I did. The MOPAR CAIs are made by K&N and half the price, warranty was fine with that. They also suggested living in Texas with alot of high MPH Highway driving with said Intake to use 0W40 or 5W40 PCMO and would not void my warranty as long as it met API SN GF-4 or the equivalent ACEA

Which is fine with me.

Dealer may complain about it, but FCA Mopar corporate is just a 1-800 number away.

With that being said, I've had my car since 6mi new, and the only issue was a squirrel chewing a horn wire shorting the BCM
WHICH was covered under warranty.

And all recalls have bad no issues getting fixed

Don't stick a 40-weight HDEO in a Pentastar v6, Fer cryin' out loud.

Use a good 5w20 or 5w30 SN gasoline engine oil, and change by the OLM. It'll probably go off at around 7000-9000 miles, depending on how you drive it.

Over here I think most people get their car serviced by their local garage / mechanic. The local guys around me are good, but only carry one or two bulk oils that tend to go into everything. Mostly name brand semi-synthetics. Typically a API SN 5W30 (possibly ILSAC) and a ACEA A3/B4 10W40.

I've never heard of any warranty issues because the oil was this rather than that. Of more importance to everybody is how frequently you changed the oil. If you went way too long in time or distance, and the problem was oil related, then this would cause you warranty problems.

As long as it's a proper engine oil, the focus tends to be frequency not viscosity.

That's the ticket

Random question:

My work sells MOPAR® (Factory Jeep brand) 5W20 Engine Oil by the quart. My cost is $3.87/quart. Should I go with the Mopar 5W20 or pick up some Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 or Amsoil full synthetic?

Thanks,

I'd use the Pennzoil Platinum, it meets the MS-6395 spec and will be fine for your Jeep. You can grab it at Walmart, or most of the auto parts stores on sales they run several times a year. Odds are the Mopar product is Pennzoil Conventional in a Mopar bottle, unless is says synthetic, then it would most likely be PP.

Thank you. I'll go grab a bottle and check. If it is Synthetic I'll go that route. If not, I'll pick up some PP.

Any SN 5w-20 that is MS-6395 rated is fine. The used oil analysis look pretty good even for the dinos run on the 5-6k range. I was going for the full OLM (~8000) with synthetic in mine but after seeing several good used oil analysis on Dino I have decided to go back to conventional in the 6k range

Just run a 5w20 or 5w30 MS-6395 approved oil and you'll be fine. There are several brands that meet that requirement. Example; I'm currently running Trop Artic which is a blend that has the MS-6395 spec. I paid $1.99 a quart. WIN!!
