2014 Prius V intake manifold cleaning

128k miles. No known problem but cleaning as a possible prevention of head gasket problem (not 100% convinced it is the cause). Do not have time to clean the EGR cooler at the same time so just the intake manifold today. EGR will be done next.

A few months ago I use Techstream tool to read my EGR flow and the number it said was about 71% flow, and from my understanding it is quite a healthy safety margin on what is considered good (I think less than 20% would be almost completely clogged).

Followed Merv's Service Secret on YouTube on how to take off the intake manifold. Mostly I use Harbor Freight's clip removal tool but I probably should have used 10mm socket in most of them instead. The clip removal tool sort of partially damage some of the zip tie clip.

After the intake manifold was taken off, what surprised me was the EGR pipe actually doesn't have too much carbon build up, and they could be easily cleaned off using Dawn Powerwash spray into the pipe. The main build up was surprisingly not the EGR but rather the PCV. Most of the intake build up was liquid and sticky, some even have a mozzarella pull like texture whereas the EGR build up is gritty hard carbon. Dawn powerwash spray, tooth brush cleaning, garden hose on jet spray to rinse, repeat. Most of the sticky build up were washed away after about 5 to 7 times. The cylinder head's intake port is mostly sticky goop from PCV and I use 70% Isoproyl and rags to clean. After 4 to 5 spray and clean they are "good enough" as in I see some varnish but no more sticky buildup clean. Color went from black to light brown.

The passage from EGR pipe to intake is small with some build up, but not that clogged. If I spray Dawn Powerwash inside and let it sit for a few mins, the discharge would look dark brown, then gradually becomes light brown, then grey. I am soaking it overnight and see how it goes.

Based on what I see so far, it seems like my usage doesn't build up carbon that much. The same 1.8L engine is probably running with less EGR due to the larger load than a typical Prius (bigger size and weight), it can also be because my vin is after Toyota's TSB on piston ring change (from low tension to normal tension in 2014, mine is after the change). This engine does not burn oil, and after 5k it remains at about 3.8 qt drained, out of 4 qt I put in usually. Typically driven in economy mode, kept throttle within economy zone on the dash, highway at normal speed (around 60-75mph). Oil is whatever 0w20 on discount like Valvoline Synpower, PP, and currently Rotella Gas Truck 5w20.

Intake ports and EGR pipe seems dirty but not clogged. The sticy stuff disappear as port injection start spraying gasoline. Minor carbon build up on the EGR pipe, but nothing significant enough to clog here.

Intake manifold has heavy pcv deposit but not much EGR carbon build up. Please excuse the grass pollen everywhere, those pollens were not from the engine, just got blown on it during cleaning. Throttle body has varnish but no sticky build up, wiped off with 70% isopropyl and rags. New PCV is installed (only $7 from dealer, might as well change it).

I noticed the following difference after cleaning:

1) Cold start engine idle: little to no difference. It was not bad before and I still notice the run, probably no EGR running at the time so no difference?

2) From low speed EV to low speed engine on: little to no difference. Again it was not bad before so it may not have much going on even after, and likely weren't using much EGR anyways.

3) Cruising with engine on and mid "power" need (the bar chart on the dash show it crossed from EV to ECO but not in PWR). Smoother, based on sound and steering wheel vibration. I can still feel the engine running but not as "mechanical" as before.

4) Cruising with engine on and higher "power" need (the bar chart on the dash show it is in the PWR region). Slightly smoother but not by much compare to before, it is not completely vibration free like an EV, but it is not like a 20 year old Corolla rough, just slightly better than before.

5) From cruising with engine on middle power to cruising with engine almost off: much smoother. It almost feels like I don't notice any NVH anymore. I was able to feel some NVH in the past and sometimes a slam like automatic transmission downshift feel. It is not noticeable anymore. Perfect transition.

Haven't gotten a chance to read the flow rate with TechStream yet, will do it soon.
 
Ours is at 100k but the PCV is in a tough spot if I’m not mistaken. Any tips how to get to that? I’d like to change that next oil change.
22mm stubby flex ratcheting wrench iirc. But it’s a pain. It’s faster to just remove the intake manifold, it takes 10 min.

Totally unnecessary maintenance btw.

Assuming you are not planning to take out the intake manifold, you probably can use a crowfoot wrench with a lot of 3/8" extension to reach it. You still have to take off the airbox and related piping so it is already 1/2 the work anyways. I personally found that after taking off the airbox, taking off the intake manifold is not really much work anyways like it only takes me 5 mins. Honestly if you are going through the trouble to change the pcv it is probably worth taking off the intake manifold to scrub the EGR port of the manifold. I see a lot more carbon that is worth cleaning than the pcv sticky slurry.

Maybe, but that thing is only $7 from the dealer (Fremont Toyota online order for pickup), and if I am taking off the intake manifold after 100k, might as well change it just so I don't have to think about it.

It is probably not necessary since most of the clogging is on the smaller EGR ports inside each intake port, scrubbing it with a 1/4" pipe cleaner (at least brass if not stainless steel, nylon probably won't do it) is going to get the most improvement.

I think taking off the airbox and the plenum tube's clamp is the hardest (I don't have the right tool so I have to go with a pipe wrench), after that taking off intake manifold is like 3 mins. All together it is faster to take those off than to order the quirky tools. After you take it off you still have to disconnect the hose by hand and it is a pita to fit your hand in to release the hose clamp anyways.
