If your daily-drivers are an Accord and a minivan, or anything of an entirely different class for that matter, would you expect to love a Nissan Versa the first time you drove one?

No i wouldn't, i drove the new Subaru, it sucks as bad as the Nissan.
These transmissions were designed in the 50's for an 22HP vehicle and they have been trying to make a purse out of a sows ear ever since.

This is not an idea who's time has come its an idea who's time has come and long gone but refused to stay dead.

It was a rental and I was sharing my experience. I can tell you this, a Honda Fit would certainly be an upgrade. Ive been in other compacts and they were not this bad. But again, for what these cost they are ok!
