Water-cooled PCMs?
smirk.gif

One must wonder if BMW engineers just got bored.

I am not even sure I like BMWs anymore. I like an E30 BMW................................

Yup, they are encased in liquid-cooled heatsinks. BMW has used multiple ECM/PCM's forever, but normally they are located in logical locations. This one threw people for a bit of a loop (I believe it was Steve who first mentioned it on here). BMW's logic was that it was the only way they could keep them cool. This of course makes me wonder why kind of CPU's they are running to require that much cooling!

BMW's aren't for everybody. But their driving experience, as least as far as I'm concerned, is quite unique.

My favourite gen is (predictably) the E39. We've got a couple E46 3'ers in the family too (my wife's and my sisters) and we had an older E34, that belonged to my other sister for quite a while. The E39 just feels like a better car. I could have bought an E60 M5 back when I was shopping, but I always wanted an E39 and just like the car better. The E60 has an extra 100HP and two more cylinders, but I certainly didn't find the performance of the E39 lacking. In the end I found a clean example in the colour I wanted so I bought it.

Man, I wish you'da said E34!!

I like E30.

In my E30, anything under "About 110MH" felt like about 60MPH, and anything OVER was NICE! I got it up to about 130MPH on the speedometer before the M20 sort of "wound out" and was maybe starting to not want to pull anymore. On a longer highway, I am sure it would have been about half and half, with low-powed cars (HONDA CIVIC! HONDA CIVIC! HONDA CIVIC! INTEGRAS AND CIVICS WERE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH ME! ALL BONE STOCK OF COURSE, MINE INCLUDED) would have been left behind, while Nissan Sentras (DECEPTIVELY fast in 1990-1993 gen) and anything midsize/mid-powered.. would have perhaps pulled farther ahead (again, Nissan Maxima, etc.)

This is about 12 years ago, btw.

I looove the E34 in Ronin. What a classic. I love that chase. Love love love. RHD but so what..
*** Actually, it WASN'T RHD? Is that accurate for France?

Ahhhh yes, the S70B56 5.6L V12
smile.gif

Comparable power to the 5.0L V8 in the E39 M5 at 380HP/410lb-ft vs 400HP/390lb-ft. But of course having 4 more cylinders and displacing .6L more.

And, did you know.. That M70/S70 has underpinnings alll the way back to my favorite BMW engine this far, and the one I had the pleasure of being my first BMW.. The M20B27 (maybe M20B25 as well, i don't know) in my E30?

I had an E30M20B27.

M20

Quote:
The M20 was the basis for the M21 diesel engine and the M70 V12 engine.[4]

M70

BMW E30. (84091 3-series)

^^And yes I know that is an M3. Desireable, but I like torque more.. I think? Unsure.

The 5-series one kept their computers in the trunk and had special roof drains strategically placed there to flood them :-) I am only kidding about the strategic portion but it is true that the computers are in the lowest point of the trunk and water from roof drains end up there. You can imagine the rest.

BMW has a fetish with exotic cooling systems!

I think this is appropriate

Vikas:

Which 5-series are you speaking of? Mine has ECM's in a few locations (under the hood, under the trunk, in one of the doors (IIRC) and there's some computation gear in the rear pillars too for the rear antenna\security receiver antenna\rear windows heater that is integrated into back window, LOL!)
