I'm looking at a local private party sale 2014 Chevy Silverado. Everything checks out and the truck was serviced well for 90k on the clock.

Any specific issues with these trucks?

It has the 5.3L EcoTec3 8 cylinder, which I read some people don't like because of the V4 feature it has to improve fuel economy. There are plug in devices that will disable it and keep it in true V8 mode, which interests me.

It has the 6L80 6 speed auto transmission.

I read that the AC system is not the greatest on these. Is this an easy fix/repair?

If I decided to purchase this truck, will it go another 100k miles trouble free?

The 2014 5.3 is the re-designed Gen 5 engine and shouldn't have the same problems as the earlier Gen 4's with the variable displacement system. The 6L80 as far as I know has a good reputation. Might as well have the transmission fluid changed. 200 K should not be a problem if it was maintained.

I've replaced quite a few 2014 L86 5.3L engines for various reasons, I chalk it up as "First Year" issues as I have NOT replaced any 2015 or 2016 L86 engines.

The 6L80E has been around since 2007, While it had some teething issues early on.....It has since became a VERY good transmission!

The AC issue is mostly from a leaking A/C line that is misdiagnosed as a leaking compressor.....I've heard the "I replaced this compressor 4 times & it's still leaking"

I wouldn't buy a 2014 with the expectation it will last another 100,000 trouble free miles at market value as the "market" doesn't abide to the fact this year is more troublesome that the truck it replaced & the 2015!!!

On the Silverado forums a lot of people complain about the "Chevy Shake" with this generation. With many different reasons blamed for it (drive shaft, torque converter, etc), I don't think they actually know the cause.

Chevy Shake I think only affects crew cabs trucks. OP, search chevy shake.

A guy on my CTS-V forum, who supposedly is somewhere in GM management, says they know the cause of Chevy Shake and the cost to Lemon Law something like 20% of the vehicles affected is cheaper than a recall.

This is a foolish stance from GM. What's the future cost of the 20% of owners who may never buy another GM product and the negative word of mouth? That could be far more than a recall. I feel that should be outlawed. If 1/5 of a product you produce has to be litigated due to problems, a mandatory recall should be law.

When you sre considering buying one of this generation of gm truck - and there is the distinct possibility of it developing chevy shake and gm either does not know how to fix it (or will not tell you)... that is so frustrating .... I say that 'cuz I'm generally gm-centric and I 'kinda like those trucks.

That guy is full of it. Even if it were true and they decided not to do a recall, they would at least stop making new trucks with Chevy shake.

Your comment has merit... yes.

The deals on new trucks are pretty good... I've seen $12,000 off sticker. If you can swing it, a 2018 has all the bugs worked out of it. I traded a 2015 in on a 2018 for just $4,000.00 difference.

I don't put a lot of miles on my trucks, about 8,000 miles / yr. But I didn't have single problem with my 2015 in 28,000 miles. And my 2018 is a zero defect vehicle as well.

The A/C problem on 2014 and 2015 was due to a leaky condenser. There is also a recall on the steering box for 2014 and some 2015's. Some folks with high miles have needed to replace the vacuum pump for the brake booster. It is engine driven.

If it's a "shaker" you'll know it... just do a test drive at highway speeds. It should be smooth and quiet.

The only concern I have about these trucks is the DI engine. No problems reported on the forums, but it's possible that a valve cleaning could be required at some point.

I plan on keeping my 2017 forever and I am guessing at some point I'll have to pay for a walnut shell blasting on the intake valves. It's cheaper than a new truck though.

The only other thing I worry about is the 8-speed. They tend to bang into gear sometimes (mostly the 1-2 upshift) and I'm curious if that will have any effect on longevity.

Owned a 2014 Silverado and would wind up selling it after 6 months of use. My problems were just numerous interior rattles and shakes they could or would not address. Others had engine, transmission shift and shaking issues.

That being said, vast majority of people seem to have gotten a decent truck in that generation but the instances of problems were more than noticeable and could not be discounted as one off's.

My take in buying a used one as you describe, so long as it checks out and service can be verified, any early problems if any may have been addressed on it and is probably a good truck. As with any used vehicle, it will still have risk of ownership going forward.

Have you looked at the payment difference verses a new truck? They are giving big discounts on the 2018s. I just bought one a couple of months ago.

I liked our 2017 Tahoe 4WD enough to buy a 2018 Silverado Z71 4WD a couple months back …
Smooth, no shakes … the AFM and 6 speed are seamless … both E3 5.3L

I think this is the truck the OP is talking about since it's the only private party 2014 Silverado with 90k on it in the area. Looks like it was oil sprayed for winter. I checked the place out that they mention and may take my cars there. Great price on the oil spray too, only $50 for small cars. Another place charges $140 for Corrosion-X via Groupon.

That's the one. Seems to be well taken care of.

I figure if it made it to 90k, it probably doesn't have a lot of the common problems I have been reading about on GM forums?

I like the body style. I wish it had some rear A/C vents but can live without. I took a higher mileage used deal myself on a 2016 GMC 1500 6.2 8 speed. No issues so far and its at 73k now, GM has no records of doing anything under warranty or otherwise at any of its dealerships under this VIN number. I look at the new 2019 redesign and i don't see anything i have to have.
