Actually, according to the 2015 technical specifications of both cars the curb weights are as follows in lbs.:

Jetta (Manual/Auto): 3047 / 3124
Passat (Manual/Auto): 3172 / 3230

Based on car pooling(45 miles each way) as passenger mainly the larger model from same make simply ages significantly better. The ride/rattle factor in larger 140k-250k is superior as model ages. I think large chassis soaks the vibration,thuds, and bumps better so vehicle is typically more solid. Also noise level and seat comfort seems to be drastically different.

Comparisons Corolla vs Camry, Civic vs Accord, Jetta vs Passat older(don't appear to be same maker then), and BMW 3 series vs BMW 5 series.

Seems like no brainer to me.
