Well, when I bought my focus two months ago, my mom was looking at an F-150. A bunch of factors meant that plan was nixed for the time being. We really only had 3 complaints about the equinox.

1. Turning radius sucked
2. Not enough room for all of us for long trips comfortably
3. Towing capacity only 3,500lb.

As far as the latter, and the truck thing, my dad and I have come to the agreement that when he gets home, him and I will probably split the cost of a used pickup truck that we'll share.

For the time being though, we realized something. We originally wanted to get another expedition too. Instead of spending more, mom decided that while we were out running errands like we usually do on saturdays to stop by the dealer that we bought the cruzes and equinox from.

They had some new 2013 Traverses in, which are restyled, and improved over the previous ones. Basically, she was able to trade her equinox for a 2013 Traverse LT with heated seats, the dealer put on a hitch at-cost, and the payment is exactly the same as it was with the equinox, and it solves all the complaints she had. She is about as happy as I've ever seen her, and dad is happy because the payment stays the same lol.

The other part of this is that the equinox was financed joint
between mom and dad, this one is mom only. Which means that when my dad goes to apply for a mortgage loan later this year, he won't have a big loan on his credit already.

Anyway, we are very happy and it will make long trips and stuff a lot more comfortable. It also has a towing capacity of 5,200lb which is more in line with what we'd want to tow in the short-term.

The pros: As others have said, the GM 3.6L HFV6 is a sweetheart of an engine, like the 3.0L only a lot more low end torque. The controls are simple. 3 knob HVAC, door locks are on the doors where they belong, it's just simpler but still has the touchscreen for the music and ipod control. Ride is very smooth but it still handle swell, middle row is spacious and the rear has split folding. All in all, we are very happy. She also loves the color which they call champaigne silver. It's the same styling ques they are going for on the new impala.

Huh? Traded in a year old Equinox for this?
shocked2.gif

Nick PLEASE don't take this as anything but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE learn that the mindset of;

"its the same monthly payment" is a BAD thing!

REAL bad.

That is all I'll say.

Take care and I hope she enjoys this for the next year till she trades it in for something else.

Agreed. My parents haven't had payments on anything since the 90's, and even then, it was a lease for our '98 Expedition because they didn't know if they would like it or not. They did, so they bought the 2000.

Those payments can be much better served working for you in some way or another. And why my parents own a pile of real-estate.

This strikes me as vehicle ADD. Gotta have the new car smell every 12 months. I'm quite content driving around in 10+ year old vehicles that don't violate my posterior every month.

I thought I picked up a hint that you dropped in another thread about a lot of people getting new cars lately...

Sharp Traverse! I love that color and the new face Chevy is putting on their cars and SUVs. The champagne color will never look dirty.

Uh they financed this for less. The equinox was financed for 84mo this was 72 with a lower apr and she put down a couple grand. The finance cost on this is significantly less than it was on the nox. You are also forgetting we had the expedition for 8 years and this is ultimately the replacement for that. The equinox was never intended to be permanent. This one on the other hand is meant to be the new expedition. And the nox was 2 years old. I wont go into detaila but due to a bit of a snafu they pretty much sold it to us at cost between it and the trade.

Ill go into more detail when it does not take me 15 minutes to type a reply on my phone. But I will say this. My parents are NOT me. The other cruze isnt going anywhere and we are done with cars after this. Contrary to what you beleive it is not new car add

Nick again please understand that I want to just let you know how the other side lives.

ANYTIME you say payments of 72 or 84 months ON A VEHICLE (and by the way I'll incl 60 months with 48 being IMO too many) then there IS a PROBLEM.

Anytime you are justifying flipping a year old (or purchasing something new as temporary) to get "lower" payments/APR anything there is a issue IMB.

I've been somewhat there a long time ago (well before you were both plus a decade or two) and it was with a 60 month loan but I learned my lesson.

Once I did vehicles and I have done much better. I look forward to seeing 300,000 miles on something that I drive daily. I look forward to having less and less $$$ "invested" (poor word when talking about vehicles) in something that looses and requires more $$ in upkeep just to keep.

Again I'm not trying to be disrespectful but felt that for you and others PLEASE save for something THEN purchase it.

Also understand the words NEED and WANT...

Take care, Bill

Nick also understand that we all could quote the other new car posts over the years and the same thing was said for all of those.

We do care!

Congratulations (I guess.) GM appears to have come a long way with the styling of that vehicle. May look at one when we have to replace our Odyssey in a few years.

On the other hand, WOW! Buying a new vehicle and taking a depreciation hit as a "Temporary" vehicle. A "Temporary" vehicle is a 2K beater.

Seventy Two month financing is not much better than 84 IMO. If one cannot afford something in 48 months or < IMO, they can't afford to buy it. Personally, IMO payment shopping is a recipe for disaster.

Please, please, please stop adding niceties into your condescension. It's annoying.

I financed my '08 for 63 months at 0%. I traded a few year-old vehicle, too, because it had been in an accident and I'd rather explain that to the dealer and take a hit than sell it privately and possibly have to hear from the new owner. So, morals are what cost me in the end, and the anxiety of having a post-accident vehicle (along with too many other minor-to-moderate issues elsewise) are what caused me to trade. I didn't need a new vehicle, either, but neither do people need big-screens and expensive vacations (neither of which I partake in.) I do derive great pleasure from having a sporty, newer vehicle, though, so that is where I spend my money every 6-7 years.

WRT the OP's mom, lighten up. He mentioned she got a good deal on it (as good as one can get on a new vehicle, I suppose,) and for all we know that loan is at a very, very low interest rate. If < 2%, then financing for LESS time can be argued as the foolish choice. I know my mutual funds are doing better than that!

Nick, I would have just posted about the car and didn't even mention how it was paid for. No one's business unless you want it to be.

Holly [censored] 84 months financing a vehicle! I was complaining to my business partner yesterday about a 9 unit townhouse complex were building than renting taking that long to pay off!

Since you guys seem to trade vehicles every 5 minutes you should lease.

Never understood why people like to drive their assets like that, a lot of my renters are like that. Nice freaken cars, meh credit scores and no assets other than maybe a company 401k if they are lucky.

Their is nothing wrong with buying a vehicle new and financing it, you just have to drive it long enough to get your money out of it. IE well over 100k. Or you have to be making so much money that a vehicle isn't a big expense.

Sorry for typos was typed on my phone =P

Lol my parents credit scores are excellent, my dads is 800+ and my mom is high 700s. Heck mine is 725 as of two months ago.

We are never late or miss anything. The interest rate she got is 1.99% and mine is 2.79%. Not financing it out would be silly to me. We are well within our means and we all overpay. I still pay $500/mo even though my required payment us a lot lower.

All 3 of us have IRAs plus my 401k and my dads navy pension and then he will be going back to work.

We arent stupid. My parents dont normally trade cars often. This is unusual for them as we kept the expedition for 8 years the jeep for 6 and the mustang for 4. Im a different a story and after two months with the focus it isnt going anywhere. Im looking forward to getting it payed off.

You need to change your sig...

I guess I just don't understand the new math. Its obvious that I'm in the minority in this country.

We all are doing so well.

It will be interesting on the new vehicle(s) and the reason(s) for trading in come next year or two.

Bill

Did the Chevy dealership bring you a cappuccino this time instead of a coffee?

Hey... someone has to buy all of these new vehicles, lose their butts on the first year of depreciation, and then take a bath on it when they trade them back in.

Then, the rest of us can get a good deal on these vehicles.

So, it might as well be Nick and his parents... Someone has to do it.

Financial ruin? I'm not even going to bother to respond to that. Because everyone who buys new cars ends up broke and living on the streets

Whatever, you guys can have your superiority complex all you want.

Well in a year or two I'll be happy to point out to you that we still have the same vehicles. And you can say whatever you want about me but I'll thank you to keep your mouth shut about my parents. You seem to ignore what I said. My parents tend to keep cars a long time. This was unusual for them. Again we had the expedition for 8 years, jeep for 6 and the mustang 4. Before that we had the Windstar for 7 years. Its not the norm for them to trade in often.

And your math doesn't make sense either. So with an extremely low interest rate, why wouldn't you want to finance it long term? You also are ignoring that we all overpay significantly on our payments and contribute a lot to our savings. I put $200/no in my 401k and $400/no in my Roth IRA. You want to tell me again how stupid I am?
