2013 Hyundai Sonata 2.4

I just bought a low mileage 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited with the 2.4.

Does anyone have any experience with this year? Hopefully it will be a good vehicle. Really like it so far.

Neighbors and friends have reported fuel dilution issues with the Direct Injected 2.4L. They've shortened their OCI to 5,000 miles or 6 months due to warranty and too thin of oil from fuel dilution. Hyundai can be more pickier than most dealers with warranty claims so don't give them any reason to deny a valid claim.

I am at 40,000 miles on my 2013 2.4L Sonata. Great car and awesome fuel economy. Summer fuel and warmer temps at 60 mph, you will see 40 MPG US.
No issues yet. Canada OCI is 3,750 miles, so I would tend to agree that 5,000 miles should work well for you. Use OEM oil filters and enjoy.

What kind of oil do you use? Do I have to use OEM filters for the vehicle to be covered under the warranty?

No issues with either Hyundai here. I belong to a few Hyundai forums and there is very little evidence that they're tougher on warranty claims than anyone else. At 40K miles dilution is much less as evidenced by UOA of other post 20K mile vehicles. Even with dilution, the wear metals in those vehicles didn't/haven't shown any issue. The cars are solid and reliable but noisy according to many. I like the diesel clatter, its grown on me. My mixed driving mpg is 28. Oil requirements are API SM / ILSAC GF-5, 5W20/5W30/10W30. The OEM oil filter is NOT required. I've used Pure Ones and Bosch with no problems. Some will say use only synthetics with low Noack numbers but others here have used Pennzoil conventional, Valvoline conventional and other conventionals with great success. The Theta II 2.4 has been on the roads since late 2009 as 2010 models and there has been no rash of intake valve deposit issues reported.

Hyundai has a TSB on using OEM filters. I use them and they work well. They are good quality filters as well. As always, go with what you feel comfortable using.
I use 5W-20 Pennzoil Platinum in the winter and Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 or 5w30 in the spring, summer, fall.

So there's an actual bulletin on the oil filter itself? Any idea where to get a look at that? I have a 13 2,4 and just noticed all the issues with disappearing oil, #2 crank dealings / con rods and sludge. With all that going on there must be something to it all. Who makes their filters anyways or is it a state secret?
I've had no issues but a set of Oem Kumo regular tires. those
tires that are worn out at 32K with light scalloping . They got quite loud all of a sudden and stayed that way. The dealer service mgr. blamed it on not rotating Twice a year. Something about resetting the electronic steering then also. I just told him I never heard of any such nonsense and if the thing had that much of a steering worry they should have stuck with the old style. I think this will be my last Hyundai and it's back to Honda and either way the Sonata will be going bye bye before 60 K when the warranty goes out.

I had a bad set of Kumho tires before but I rotated mine. This was on a Nissan Sentra. Did you not rotate the tires on the car?

My dad has owned two 2013 Sonatas. Both have been trouble free. I think one's radio was acting up and it was replaced under warranty. He also has towed misc items on a snowmobile trailer ~500 miles each way (about 15 total trips) when he was moving. The trailer tongue weight was low, but it weighed 1k+ easy.

The first Sonata was totaled in a flood.

Hyundai's had TSB's on using OEM filters since forever. Most of the time the aftermarket filters work fine. On some individual engines they cause a rattle at startup due to bypass valve PSI being different or slightly out of spec on the aftermarket filters. Changing to OEM generally eliminates that rattle. It's occurred enough that there's a TSB on it. Hyundai has had those TSB's on this issue since at least the early 2000's if not for longer.
