Here is my latest UOA / particle count on my 2013 XL1200C with a Harely Super Premium 5 micron filter.

Copper is still high.
I'm thinking rear cylinder valve guide as I see the fuel trim / VE vary 3-5% on the rear cylinder with my PowerVision.

It doesn't appear the Super Premium 5 filter is as restrictive as one might think
smile.gif

It has more 14, 21, 38 and 70 micron particles than any of the other filters!

First UOA is the Standard HD Sportster filter. Part numbers- 63796-77A chrome, 63805-80A black
The Second and Third are Mobil 1 M1MC131 filters. 99.9% @ 10 micros per the Mobil1 filter hotline'
The fourth is the HD Super Premium 5 filter. Part numbers- 63731-99A black 63798-99A chrome

sportsters are generally the best engine HD makes + red line is great oil. your filter is likely NOT 5 micron, so you need to learn about them. i ran wix in my 06 sportster 1200, cheaper than better IMO

Well Harley says the filter is a "5 Micron SuperPremium5 Oil Filter", with no indication of the efficiency at 5 microns.
No mention of "nominal", no efficiency rating or Beta Ratio.

The marketing material indicates it has a synthetic media.
HD also offers a "SuperPremium10 - 10 micron" filter for the VRSC models.

The HD SuperPremium5 filter is less than $10, the Standard HD Sportster filter is just over $9.
The Wix is just over $10 on Amazon, the local parts store has it for $10.50.

The WIX 57148 I am currently running is 50% efficient at 6 microns, 95% at 20 microns.
They list the Beta Ratio as "Beta ratio 2/20=6/20" which is 50% @ 6 microns 95% @ 20 microns

I'll see how well it does in about 5000 miles

If it was mine I’d go back to the previous filter(s). Then again, if it was mine I wouldn’t run Red Line’s 20w50, either. I’d run their 10w40, or maybe possibly perhaps their 15w40.

It is curious.

It would be interesting to see what (if any) effect scavenging at the change had/has.

Other than that not much (short of tearing it down) to do but watch it and wait for something to make itself known...

Hello:

If you stop changing the filter at every oil change the particle count numbers will come down dramatically as the filter gets more efficient. By 15,000 miles the particle count will be really low. I have no experience with the filter that you are using. When I did this with an Amsoil filter the >4 micron numbers dropped by a factor of 10 at the second UOA. As an aside, not making any suggestions or recommendations, I ran 10-30 Amsoil motorcycle oil in my Harley. That oil gave me the lowest wear metal results of anything I had tried. As I recall the comparison oils were 15-40 Rotella, 5-40 Rotella.

Enjoy the summer riding season.

Dave

I just dug out the Harley UOA. The >4 micron count was 538 after three runs without changing the filter.

I may try an Amsoil filter down the road.
They say the motorcycle filters are 98.7% efficient at 20 microns.
That would be a Beta ratio of Beta ratio 20=75.

DrDave - yes a filter becomes more efficient as it removes more contaminates.
Eventually the particle counts should go up when the pressure differential opens the bypass.

Here is Amsoils statement on the EA Motorcycle filters (yes they increase sales by saying to replace every oil change
smile.gif
)
"Ea Motorcycle Oil Filter Service Life
For maximum engine protection, AMSOIL recommends
changing Ea Motorcycle Oil Filters at every oil change."

The Amsoil automotive filters are rated for 15,000 (Ea15K) or 25,000 (EaO) miles.
