I have a new '13 GMC Sierra with 4.8 engine. I have 1,500 miles on it, and was wondering what the viewers thought might be a good time to do the first oil change? I have paid for a program that gets me first 5 changes, so it will be a dealer change. I have driven it at varying speeds, no sustained interstate driving, and no towing or hauling for a break in period. thanks for your thoughts on this

The dealer is probably only going to let you change it when the MM goes off, or at a pre-set 5000 or 7500 mile interval.
You can do it yourself, of course, and still take advantage of the free oil changes. Just make sure you use an approved oil since it's under warranty.

This is a good milage to do it. And, yes, change it yourself and get your 5 free ones at the specified interval. Use a good filter to help eliminate any extra wear-in metals, like a Pure 1.

If I had a OLM in my truck I would disconnect it or put a piece of tape over it so I would not have to see it. I don't need a computer to tell me when to change my oil.

I strongly recommend you follow the OLM. I might change the factory fill a bit early but my oldest van has just shy of 500k miles and burns no oil, doesn't smoke or rattle, and we have ALWAYS simply changed it when the light comes on!
On a V8 the GM OLM is golden IMO.

That's why I stated to use a spec'd oil.
But, it does not read anywhere in the manual that you "MUST" use a GM (factory) filter.
What 2010_FX4 states does make sense, but at the owners discretion.
They started that program with GMC in February and with Chevy in March. If you bought before then you "missed" out. I bought my Chevy in February. I'm not sure, but I assume the free changes would be tied to the OLM, so in 25K miles (I think that's right) GM probably would only do 3 or 4 changes. I'm sure for the general buyer this is a plus, but for some OCD (not fram) oil nut like me I'd never be happy letting the dealer change the oil with the weaker semi-syn dexos juice. I don't think I would have used this freebe if I had gotten it.
Note that for our new truck it can be as little as 4000 miles. OLM varies wildly by usage patterns.

not sure if OP realizes or not, but looking thru the online manual that was posted----he gets a cool trans temp gauge in the DIC
Steve in FL--you use these trucks--maybe this is new to you, and maybe not, but there is a fast idle setting which can be invoked in the preferences section of the DIC--lets the truck idle at 1200 rpm. (You had previously mentioned in your business application, the trucks do a fair about of time at fast idle--here is the easy way to do it)
